High-level government officials exempt from heightened security screenings

High level U.S. government officials are exempt when traveling commercially with "government sanctioned security details," according to AP report.

The Washington Post had a similar story today (much easier to read too), going down as far as law enforcement officers, etc. There's a thread a couple pages back about it. It seems to be another hot topic as all the fancy pants people are using terms like "well if I had to go through security I wouldn't want that"

Doesn't "government sanctioned security detail" mean they are armed? Why check to see if they also might have bombs?

And don't forget those that can afford private air transportation.

Best excuse yet, to build your own LSA.

I saw Sandra Day O'Connor being escorted through the exit lane one time with a couple of secret service types. :td:

This is nothing particularly new. The SOP document from last December listed quite a litany of exempt passengers.

Yes, comrade, all Politburo members and high-ranking party officials are exempt from this "inconvenience".

On a normal day with Constitutional screening, I think this is actually a good procedure. We all know long security lines could be a target for a bomber. Now think if it was IAD or DCA on a Friday afternoon when congress is adjourning. There could end up being several, or dozens of congress people stuck in a small place simultaneously with no real security, making that line a really attractive target.

As for current events, any congressperson that supports what is going on now I do believe needs to experience it first hand, along with their spouse, children and grandchildren.
