TSA agent punched in chest by passenger

A passenger was arrested Tuesday for punching a Transportation Security Administration officer in the chest after passing through a body-imaging machine at Indianapolis International Airport, police said.

According to police, John A. Christina, 51, admitted to punching the officer after passing through the machine and asking the officer about increased security procedures. The officer replied that he does not normally work in Indianapolis and could not answer the question.

Christina then punched the officer in the chest, police said. The officer, who is normally assigned to the Dayton, Ohio, airport, asked Christina why he punched him.

"I was only kidding with you," Christina replied.

Other TSA agents and passengers witnessed the incident, police said, and Christina was arrested and charged with battery.

When a passenger abuses a TSO, it's front page news!

When a TSO abuses a passenger, it's Wednesday (or Thursday, or whatever day it is). ;)

That article makes little sense. Who would reply "I was only kidding with you" when asked why they punched someone?

tom911 Nov 17, 2010 1:55 pm

Maybe they can post signs like that have at BART fare gates warning passengers of the penalties for assaulting an employee.

This story doesn't even begin to make sense. He asked a question, the response was "I don't know" so he punched the TSO?

The TSO had to say something else, unless the puncher was just a psycho.

I am guessing it might have been a "bro' thing" kind of a punch.
Incredibly stupid decision of the passenger...

mightykong Nov 17, 2010 2:01 pm

I'm not trying to sound too conspiratorial here, but just curious if this could be a deliberate setup by the TSA to show opt-out people as "wackos".

jordanmills Nov 17, 2010 2:01 pm

Well that won't help anything.

Depends on what a "punch" means.

Suppose I make a fist and lightly tap someone on the side of the shoulder with that fist. That's not an uncommon playful act --- at least, on TV sitcoms. But that looks an awful lot like an act of assault. Put a little more force into the action, and now it's hard to tell the difference.

Unfortunately, it's an old story. When a TSO makes a joke, it's "only a joke", and the passenger who overreacts obviously has no sense of humor and needs to get a life. When a passenger makes a joke, it's an act of assault, and the passenger gets arrested.

So much for making passengers "partners" in the screening process. :(

Nobody should be assaulting anybody. However, the TSA is not getting much support in the comments section of that story, so I guess it shows how far the tide has turned against the TSA in the general public's mind.

The officer replied that he does not normally work in Indianapolis and could not answer the question.

This also shows the frustration of different procedures at different airports. DAY and IND, really? Also, is the TSA so short staffed they have screeners doing TDY?

There's gotta be more to the story here.

That was my first thought, but usually that punch would be on the arm, not the chest, right?

uncertaintraveler Nov 17, 2010 2:04 pm

Slightly more informative article over in Newsstand here.

I don't fully understand though why it is battery when a passenger touches a TSA agent, but not when the roles are reversed.

LessO2 Nov 17, 2010 2:05 pm

I do not condone physical assault, but I have to say this was only a matter of time.

to TSA clerks, they probably don't differentiate any more than they are capable of differentiating between a non-invasive pat-down and a sexually assaultive grope...
