The War Against Toner Cartridges

The UK Home Secretary has announced a ban on toner cartridges being carried in hand luggage or by non-approved carriers.

This means that UPS would still have been allowed to carry the bombs if they had been loaded anywhere but Yemen

"No, Officer, you see, this is a CYAN toner cartridge. It's not one of those bomb-laden magenta ones, no sir."

But wait, not just an all out ban, but

Toner cartridges larger than 500g larger than 500g (17.6oz) will be banned from hand luggage on flights departing from the UK.

So if you have four that are all under 500 grams, can you bring them on and connect them on the flight?

For comparison, the standard HP Laserjet 4 cartridge when full is 500 g, so that's the point where you can no longer carry them on.

I am not 100% sure, but believe the cartridges manipulated in this attempt were smaller than that and would be allowed as carry on.

I thought I didn't need any additional reasons to avoid the UK (insane APD, mandatory LHR Nude-O-Scopes) but this jackass has managed to provide an additional reason.

I can see why you would think that something from a Murdoch company would be dodgy - but Sky is legally required to tell the truth.

What I can't understand is why the ban won't make any difference to al-Qaeda - except that they now have to get UPS to ship it's bombs from Saudi instead of Yemen.

Just a thought - will they have to go in a resealable clear plastic bag?

As crazy as this knee jerk reaction is, i have a better question.

When was the last time you carried a toner cartridge with you? either checked or carry on. In my over 20 years of frequent travel i have carried on a toner cartridge exactly ZERO times.

Stupid rule, yes. Effect on 99.9% of the traveling public 0

But, it keeps the masses happy - the government is going to save them from the evil carry-on toner terrorists while doing absolutely dick-squat about the actual underwing security issues that have been raised as the primary security concern over and over again. The puppy posts about the "new security measures" obfuscates the larger issues.

The only time I've brought a cartridge with me was when I had to bring a printer on a trip. It was an inkjet cartridge, but I bet you could inject PETN into it as well..

I carry an inkjet printer with me on many trips. The question is whether the ban on "toner cartridges" is going to apply to inkjets as well.
