That said, I've seen plenty of opt-outs (and some opt-ins!) and I've not seen any power-tripping, bullying, or retaliation. Sometimes the TSO will point out that the machine doesn't use x-rays, but I've seen no attempted coercion. Just a discreet call for an opt-out assist on the radio, a quick hand-off, and a standard pat-down. No more, no less. I hope it doesn't deter anyone from traveling through here because we are all nice, polite people here despite general public opinion.

PS. I've always seen written on here that the vast majority of people utilizing these machines end up getting patted down somewhere on their body and I always wondered why. Now I know. Items in pockets are by and large the main culprit here, mostly wallets and/or folded money for me and cell phones for women. A close second for women seems to be all the rhinestone and beaded embellishments on their clothing.
Thank you for your kind words. This goes to show you that the TSA is not all bad....sometimes it depends on the "airport management/ TSA management at that particular airport."

I do believe you are right. I feel that local TSA management styles have a lot of influence on local checkpoint behaviors. Our management expects us to exhibit politeness and courtesy at all times. Granted, that can be difficult at times because we are all only human, but we must be doing something right because our passengers are always telling us how much nicer we are than elsewhere. There is a way to follow SOP and not be jerks in the process.

I will check this out; thanks.

Angry Ogg update

OGG MMW up and running today. I was able to bypass it Mrs. NY-FLA not so lucky. She got the grope. Added bonus a lecture from a goof in a TSA golf shirt, a trainer brought in for the inaugural, apparently, whose transmit skills were clear, receiving skills, not so much. Now I've heard that TSA takes air security seriously and that I am ignorant because the MMW is not a <whole body scanner>. I was trying to ask why, if airport security uber-alle, everyone including flight crew, Airport Starbucks employees and various custodial staff didn't have to use it, but recognized the zealot was a waste of breath (and O2)

Heads up, ALB flyers!

Looks like ALB just got the "new" machines that only use generic outlines.

If anyone has self-opt out tips for ATL South terminal, such as locations of scanners and WTMD lines, IŽd greatly appreciate it.

Haven't been through MLB in year, but just transited there this week. I know it's on the list having MMW, but there's NO WTMD. So much for the <whole body scanner> not being the primry method of screening.

Here are my notes from September, about the CENTER checkpoint:

On the right side (lower numbers), I saw an MMW at lane 4 and lane 12 only. SDOO is easy, as long as they have many lanes open. Note: They had two entrances to this one checkpoint. Seems like the right side gives the best odds.
So go during a busy time, enter the checkpoint on the right side, then pick a WTMD only lane. (Although watch out how far to the right you go, as the farthest set of lanes is around a blind corner.)

You can use any checkpoint you want; everything is connected airside.

Was through MLB about 3 weeks ago. The WTMD is still there, it's the device with the highly professional orange traffic cone at the center of its archway.
Got to watch a young lady with a dog-in-arms waltz through the WTMD, since, obviously, assuming the perp position would be impractical while carrying a dog.
Sure hope the evil-doers don't/can't/won't travel with animals.

STL East Terminal lanes 2 & 3 lead to a single BKSX. Easy to self-select lanes 1 or 4 which only have WTMD.

Update for PDX.

Checkpoint D/E has THREE MMWs for a total of 7 lanes. The lane at the far left is clear, everything else is a MMW/WTMD pair.

Checkpoint A/B/C had one MMW when I landed Tuesday. When I left today (Thursday), a second one had been shoehorned in there. I'd suspect there will be a third one eventually. Same setup as the D/E checkpoint, except the far right lane at A/B/C right now is WTMD only.

The international arrivals checkpoint at PDX has two MMWs.

For those of you counting at home, friendly little PDX now has 7 total MMWs. I can't wait to see what happens with the lines there now.

For DCA at the DL terminal: the middle lane in the CP is MMW free. The other four lanes lead to a MMW/WTMD pair.

ITO now has a new MMW as of yesterday and they were eager to try out the new toy today. I asked and it sounds like they are planning to use it as primary

I completely missed it. Mabe because the <whole body scanner> is planted right in the center of attention there and it almost seems you have to walk through it no matter what.
