I'd follow some of the usual precautions that one should take when out of the country, such as not carrying lots of cash on you, don't display your valuables, etc.. You could also register with the US consulate, in case there are any situations that require you to leave the country..

Safe travels!

I travel there several times a year for both work and leisure, and I treat it no differently than I treat Chicago, New York, London, etc. The main areas are perfectly safe during the day, at night use normal street smarts. I have heard of executive bodyguard services, but I have never seen a need for this. I think it is a perfectly safe city.

The only thing that is a bit different (although NYC has a somewhat similar setup) is that if you plan on taking taxis, there are two different types. There are Sitio taxis, which park at designated stands. These cost more, but use a fixed price to your destination. My local friends tell me they are safer.

The other type (often, though not always, painted green) are cheaper, and you hail them on the street. They are possibly less safe, though I use them extensively, as well.

If arriving at the airport, use the prepaid taxi windows at the exit. You tell them where you are going, they sell you a ticket, and you give your driver the ticket. No cash changes hands in the cab.

Other than that, be city smart, and you will likely be fine.

You didn't say which areas of the city you're going to be in, but assuming it's the typical central business and leisure areas like Reforma, Polanco, Zona Rosa, Condesa, and Santa Fé on the way to Toluca, I don't see why you should have any problems. I agree with cparekh, I've been working here for 2 months now, and see no difference in safety to any other major city.

Apart from the airport taxis, which seem to be very well regulated (just find a kiosk in the arrival area after exiting customs), you'll probably be taken for a ride in more ways than one: taxi fares are just random numbers. A huge amount of money is not at issue (normally less than USD 10 for a trip anywhere within a 15km radius). If you ask your hotel to call a taxi (usually the most expensive option), they'll probably register your trip and the taxi-drivers details if that makes you feel safer.

Other minor points: no trolleys in the airport after exiting customs, and traffic is an all-day nuisance (allow for it in your plans, or take the metro).

My last trip to Mexico City my company was very concerned, I was picked up by a known driver and was told to only leave the hotel with the armed guard they had provided, which included escorts to and from the airport and our offices. Personally I found this a bit over the top and that there was a great place near by that had amazing rolled tacos and a good happy hour a 5 minute walk (shh don't tell :D)

Really though, I would caution don't get in a cab you haven't prearranged and you should be fine, also KNR policy is something that might be considered (its not that expensive and worth it IMO), but that's something not appropriate for a IBB.
