Mr. Mocek,

It is my opinion that Chief Rockwell has answered your question(s).

Either you are mistaken, or his response was lost in the mail.  Please do me
the favor of repeating his answers if you believe I am mistaken.

1. Mr. Rockwell did not state whether or not CMH airport police understand
that neither TSA nor local regulations prohibit photography in
publicly-accessible areas of the airport, of "non-security related areas
and items".  Mr. Rockwell, yes or no?

2. Mr. Rockwell did not state what action he recommends someone take when
while engaging in photography at CMH, he or she is confronted by airport
staff or police who assert that photography is prohibited in a circumstance
in which it is not, in fact, prohibited.  Mr. Rockwell, what action do you
  recommend?

3. Mr. Rockwell did not state whether or not it is his understanding, as
Robert Mauldin asserted in an e-mail to me on April 14, 2009, that when
someone takes a photograph in the airport terminal, and the image contains
a security-related area or item (e.g., passenger screening checkpoint,
access control system, CCTV camera, explosive trace detection device,
etc.), that person has committed a level two minor misdemeanor.  Mr.
  Rockwell, yes or no?

Can anyone else answer these questions?

The only place I had a problem with using a camera at the airport was while photographing planes was at Heathrow by some jacka$$ rent-a-cop. But I hope that you can work out your problems with the CMH.

CMH is my home airport. I've planned on taking pictures of the checkpoint next time that I fly but if I read the local LEO's comments correctly, they have a local rule (possibly made-up) that I cannot take pictures there.

I would love to see what happens. They are far from the worst TSA screeners that I have seen. (That honor goes to ONT in California!) I will have to leave lots of extra time. I teach a 3 day course as part of my living and if I cannot make the flight I will lose a lot of money.
