Bringing a small screwdriver type tool on plane?
 

I'm going to be traveling abroad from the u.s. to europe later this year. I'm going to be doing a lot of bike riding when I arrive so I bought a gps mount for the bike so I can mount my navigation device. In order to mount it, I need to screw in 2 small screws. Which comes with this 2.5 inch long mini L-shaped tool which screws in the screws. This tool doesn't even have sharp tips to it, the bottom and top ends are flat and in a 6-sided shape.

Would I be able to bring this with me on my carry-on? I'm going to try not to check in any luggage so that I can try to get bumped and get vouchers and a first-class ticket. I heard that your chances of getting bumped, especially for international flights is higher if you don't check-in luggage.

i doubt your allen wrench will be a problem, but keep in mind that the link above is for the US. I did have a small phillips screwdriver confiscated last year at LHR. Lady told me no tools with a point allowed.

Ex-USA, tools under 7 inches are permitted, as long as they are not solitary blades.

Ex-any other country - you will have to check with your planned departure point. For example, I had to dispose of my mini-screwdriver when attempting to get on a domestic flight HND-OKA.

It is obviously all relative. When we flew with her scooter for the first time I had a few over 7" with me and no issue because I would not be able to get to them if I needed because they were checked. :cool:

I suspect most security points in Europe will not let you take screwdrivers through if they are detected. I've had nail clippers confiscated because of the nail file they come with, which is probably less than 5 cm in length. I now break off the file as I don't need it in any case.

Is the bike gonna be rented? Or shipped over in checked luggage? I'm just trying to imagine in the scenario why the tool needs to be in carryon? I can't see there being any issue at all if it travels with the bike, which seems more sensible anyway.

Allowed on plane:
Small compressed gas cartridges
(Up to 2 in life vests and 2 spares. The spares must accompany the life vests and presented as one unit)

Funny mental picture:
Someone walking onto the plane wearing a life vest... Or security for that matter.

I've been traveling with a screwdriver set (a very sharp one I might add) for eight years now. Has never been detected by any aviation security organization anywhere.
