Australia to get the nude scope

"Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said the package of measures would strengthen international and domestic aviation security against emerging threats.

This would include the latest body scanners, the next generation of multi-view x-ray machines, and bottle scanners which could detect liquid-based explosives."

No word on whether you can decline the nude scan and opt for a grope instead. I suspect it will be compulsory as AUS dont really care for "rights"

RadioGirl's (possibly optimistic) translation: "We've been told to do this for US-bound flights but we're going to drag our feet on it for at least a year." Seriously, when have you ever heard any gov't say "by early next year" and actually meet the target?

Just a few weeks ago, KRudd's transport minister was downplaying the WBI on the basis of cost, effectiveness and the training required. And now:

Passengers are expected to experience delays of about six minutes due to the screenings, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese said.
Six minutes may not seem like much, but IME the wait time at Sydney Int'l is 0 to 0.5 minutes. I'm picking up that KRudd and his transport minister are divided on the WBI issue.

I'm not panicking yet. I don't know that I agree with you that Australians don't really care for "rights", but we sure hate being told what to do by the US!

On the other hand, they do seem better at taking the piss out of government officials than is sometimes the case in the US.

There is an election this year. With the trash Rudd has been sprouting in the past year, do you really think Labour is going to win the election?
Anthony Albanese is a bigger moron then Rudd.

And Abbott is a bigger moron than the lot of them...

Labor will win purely because the alternative is exponentially worse.

I'm not holding my breath on this going ahead until after the budget.

By my count, the comments on the article in the OP are 33 to 2 against the nude-o-scope. There's hope for this country yet. ;)
