Of course not. But that wasn't the OP's question. The OP asked for personal preferences, and mine is for the scan over the pat-down.

If others prefer the pat-down because they're worried about Internet postings or just because that's their personal preference, then I respect their choice. It just doesn't change my own personal preference.

Neither. I drive.

I stopped flying when my government began treating me as a criminal before allowing me onto the aircraft.

Here's looking at you, kid!

MsTravelBug,

I respect your preference, while deeply regretting the fact that we have to decide between being groped or nude-o-scoped. This discussion simply should not exist.

Well BillScann you talked me into not doing the WBI. A mess with the patter downer's head could be much more entertaining.

MusicCityMom Jan 18, 2010 4:35 pm

I don't have a choice since I wear 2 medical devices that absolutely cannot go through that type of radiation from a WBI- an insulin pump and real time glucose sensor. I have to fly to Dubai in March and I just hope those idiots don't give me grief over it.
I know that my 18 year old daughter will be pissed at getting patted down in Nashville. At least I don't think they have a WBI there yet.
Just want to let anyone else who uses an insulin pump to not go through the WBI

I am no fan of WBI. With that said there are two types of WBI.

Backscatter and MMW. The MMW does not emit radiation.

Not sure if MMW would be a problem for insulin pumps but wanted to be sure you knew there is a difference.

There are no WBIs at Nashville yet.

Well, maybe I should just out myself and tell the TSO that I am looking forward to the grope.

I was directed to the body scanner line in ATL last week. A few people in front of me were selected for the screening and, while it was clearly posted (multiple places) that you could opt for the pat down instead but none did.

Personally, I will take the scan over the pat down. I could care less if someone else sees my body scan. And, as to the person who said your name, flight info, address, etc. would be published with the image on the internet...you don't even show your boarding pass when you go in the machine (you put your id and boarding pass back in your luggage after the id check at airport security).

Beyond Administrative Search

Both the pat-down and the WBI are invasive and go well beyond where I think the limits of administrative search should be. Neither should be used for primary screening. Tomorrow morning I will be flying from a concourse where I know WBI is in use for secondary screening. If selected, I will probably opt for pat-down since, like MusicCityMom, I have a hidden medical device that would likely trigger a false positive in the WBI. (If it does not, the WBI is not worth the cost.) WBI makes it too easy for TSA treat passengers like objects rather than real people.

Pat down. And yes, I will request a female screener. :-D I won't get one but I want to make my preferences known.

I'm a cancer patient in remission. No body scans for me.

Point of order: BOTH are in fact "radiation", but one is 'non-ionizing".

VBackscatter is in fact X-ray and X-rays are in fact ionizig radiation.

As for millimeter wave, a study conducted by Boian S. Alexandrov and colleagues at the Center for Nonlinear Studies at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico[6] investigated how terahertz fields interact with double-stranded DNA, showing that, even though involved forces seem to be tiny, nonlinear resonances (although much less likely to form than less-powerful common resonances) could allow terahertz waves to "unzip double-stranded DNA, creating bubbles in the double strand that could significantly interfere with processes such as gene expression and DNA replication".

No body scans for me, pat down city, pal. And that's from a working RF engineer. You need to make your own decisions for your own perspnal safety, but my supervisor has already been informed that if it's a choice between whole body imaging and not flying, he'll get the bill for the rental car.

Being a 'mo I will

1) Request pat down.

2) Camp it up. Two snaps up in Z formation.

3) Make screener uncomfortable by enjoying the pat down way too much.

Warning, this technique is for advanced gays only. Those fresh out of the closet and "straight" people should not attempt.
