Yet BB has not made amends for the original post.

The lawyer would just get stonewalled ad nauseum and if their Congress person did get involved (very big 'if'), I'm sure there would be a backroom conversation and the Congress member would immediately find other issues to occupy his/her time.

If the Congressperson wasn't helpful and then got his/her name mentioned in the paper as being unhelpful, it wouldn't be good for the Congressperson's political prospects in November.

Members of Congress often love to have their name in the local/state media, but they don't want it mentioned in an article/report that portrays them as unresponsive to constituents' concerns.

Not only that, but Blogger Bob has been busy doing a massive Twitter dump to reinforce his PV post.

I've had pity for BB in the past, but this takes the cake.

@GndCB Sorry you are irked, but there are no children on the lists. Even if there were, it's the FBI's list to maintain, not TSA's.

And still no explanation on why TSO's still put the kid through extra screening.

He talks about everyone's responsibility but the TSA's

Superguy Jan 19, 2010 4:51 pm

Blogdad Bob finally posts on PV, and of course, takes no responsibility for TSA's actions, blaming the airlines and the FBI. Of course, he doesn't apologize for how he responds, say he's not a typical spokeshole. :td:

As a father of two young children, I sympathize with any parent’s frustration at being told their child is on a terrorist watch list, and empathize with any parent going through that situation. It’s terrible.

We’ve said it before, there are no 8 year olds – or other children – on the No Fly or Selectee lists. We may not own the lists (the Terrorist Screening Center does), but we know that kids aren’t on them for sure. The ticketing agent, sky cap or other airline employees at the airport do not know who is on or not on a watch list, and they have no business telling a parent that their kid is on one because it’s simply not true. Airlines can and should automatically de-select any child that appears to be on a watch list when they see them at the check-in counter. You can also check this out for other debunked myths about watch lists.

Anyone who can’t print a boarding pass from home or at a kiosk because they are currently misidentified with someone who is actually on the list should apply for redress to fix the problem. And as I’ve said before, TSA is working to implement the Secure Flight program, which brings watch list matching back to TSA from the airlines. When people provide their date of birth and gender when booking their flight under Secure Flight, it will eliminate about 99% of misidentifications once its fully implemented.

For anybody who is new to the TSA Blog, please know that I’m a blogger and not an official TSA media spokesperson.

The way I write and address issues is different than a spokesperson would address issues with traditional media, and I certainly didn’t mean to belittle the experience of any families who have been through this.

Sincerely,

Blogger Bob

I expected no better so did not hold my breath.

Seems very typical for TSA ops.

Sebastian_R Jan 19, 2010 6:21 pm

Very nice indeed, let's have a look - oh there we go: (sarcasm)

1) Semantics now on three levels: "it's not the TSAs fault, look at the FBI and the airlines" plus "I'm not a TSA spokesperson I just write on the official TSA blog" and "the kid is not on a list" even though he is treated as if he was on the list (otherwise there would be no selectee screening)

2) Not a helpful suggestion either (useless redress programme)

3) Not removing the offensive text where he insults the mother.

^ Great job and congrats again! :D

To be fair: the very last sentence could be interpreted as an apology, but I'm not quite sure.

PhoenixRev Jan 19, 2010 6:31 pm

I wonder if Bob realized that his lame response to Mikey's mom only makes him look more like a dismissive mouthpiece.

Like a poster above said, any modicum of respect I had for Bob has just gone right out the window, never to return.

chollie Jan 19, 2010 6:40 pm

Am I missing something here?

If it's not TSA's fault because the lists are owned/maintained by another government entity, then why does TSA run the redress program?

And if TSA runs the redress program to correct the FBI's lists, then blaming the kid-frisking entirely on the FBI still doesn't hold water.

Kind of silly to say the airlines should have enough sense to unilaterally remove a young child from SSSS (or whatever it currently is), when TSA seems incapable of doing the same...

At the very least, Bob could have pledged to liaise between Mikey's parents and the redress program to ensure that Mikey is removed from whatever lists he isn't on...

I think it's a DHS thing. Same incompetence, just from the parent agency. It's a nice way of passing the buckk.

Agreed.

I don't think the airlines can remove the person permanently, only "deflag" them so if they hit, they don't get the harassment. My son got tripped up on something like this. Still not sure if it was a list or not as it only happened, once, UA "deflagged" him, blamed TSA, and I didn't do a redress. But what TSA is essentially saying is that they weren't going to remove the name - only give a number saying that the person isn't the same as the the "name" on the list so they don't get harassed every time. We know how theory and practice work though.

Pretty much, it's an excuse for SecureFlight - a "solution" to a problem they created. :td:

Just because you identify yourself as a blogger, doesn't give you the leeway to be obnoxious. I know many blogger's who are very intelligent people and quite frankly would never agree with your quote below.

"The way I write and address issues is different than a spokesperson would address issues with traditional media."

As for your "myth buster", just because you put up a posting on the TSA site and say it's a myth buster doesn't make it true. We do not blindly follow Bob. That's what makes America so great.

We've contacted the airlines and they've told us they have no recourse in taking our son off the list.

We've filled out the redress information, sent in the forms and copies of our passports. We have dutifully filled out everything we've been asked to fill out and the TSA did not respond until the article hit the front page of the New York Times.

You're dealing with intelligent people Bob. People who believe in freedom, justice and the American way. Our family lives 12 miles from where the World Trade Center towers use to stand.

I was there Bob when the towers came crumbling down. I photographed funerals for weeks after 9/11 and I saw the anguish and despair. I know people who died on 9/11 Bob.

We all want the same thing. We want terrorist caught and innocent people left also. We also want an intelligent government who respects their people. Maybe it's something you ought to ponder Bob.

Sincerely,
The Hicks Family
