Peru Itinerary Critique, Please
I think that I have my itinerary worked out for Peru, but wanted to get some feedback before I book the last parts. I got an award ticket there and back (40k total), so that is covered, but how to break the time there is something that I've been debating.
My main concern is with the return: I will need a return ticket CUZ-LIM and that will be on a different PNR. My schedule allows me to absorb up to a 8 hour delay without much issue. Part of me says, "no big deal", but I've also read some reports about cancellations that affect basically that whole day. That would be bad for me. 6/24: Depart US, Red eye to YYZ 6/25: Day in YYZ (yah?), Depart afternoon to LIM 6/26: Arrive at 0050. Stay in Lima. 6/27: Stay in Lima 6/28: Travel to Cuzco 6/29: Travel to MP 6/30: Return to Cuzco from MP 7/1: Stay in Cuzco 7/2: Leave on morning flight to LIM (Currently looking at Peruvian Airlines at 1040, arrive 1150), Depart LIM at 2250 (11 hour layover/day in Lima) Thoughts? I have considered putting Cuzco first and ending in Lima, but I would like to end of a high note. I expect Lima to be nice, but a little on the cold side because it is Winter. Cuzco looks amazing, so I'd like to spend more time there. Thanks! |
Lima and much of coastal Peru is said to have this nasty sea fog and/or permanent overcast all winter (9 months) if the Humboldt Current is particularly cold.
That said, I would think the highlands first would make more sense if you have to absolutely make your flight home. LAN has LIM-CUZ flight starting at 0500 so you're no wasting too much time at LIM (immigration/custom lines are said to be bad in the early morning when the N. American flights arrive anyway). That way, you don't have to spend that much time at LIM on your way home. That'd put you into CUZ before 0630 and unless you're coming from high altitude, I'd go to Ollantaytambo or Aguas Calientes that day (much lower in elevation than CUZ which is 4-5k "higher" than an aircraft cabin is pressurised to). You can get a car that will take you to see the sights along the way. |

Hi SeattleFlyerGuy. Lima is in a bit of a bowl so fog can settle in there. Certainly not 9 months duration! The rest of coastal Peru rarely sees fog, if so, temporary. LIM is Cat III now so fog causes fewer problems for airlines with pilots with that capability. Hence if you are concerned maybe fly LAN? They also seem better at handling CUZ problems, in and out when others not. LAN also has more metal and many more flights to adjust for problems (vs Peruvian limited metal).
I prefer to be in the city of my international departure the day before, as a general guideline, so you're thought to start with the Sacred Valley and end with Lima is worth reconsidering. Hope this is helpful. |
