Siempre, I think Uber would be safer because a third party has the identity of the driver. One solution for the OP might be to use the street cabs for short rides around town and a Green cab from the airport when he is unfamiliar with his surroundings and is laden with all his belongings.

Lima isn't Bogota, and the taxis here don't make a habit out of taking people to ATMs and demanding they withdraw all of their money. Nor do they try and charge me 5 times the amount because I'm a gringo.
I don't see the need for Uber at all in Lima with Easy Taxi being a safe backup for those who feel they are going to be cheated. Remember, Easy Taxi has all the prices programmed into the app so you can just check the fares before boarding, even if it isn't an automated process like Uber is. |
I'm a fair skinned blonde gringa and never had any issues with taxis in Lima.
If one pulls over and I get a bad feeling, I wait for another. |

We had no issues with Taxis in Peru, after I learned that airport taxis will quote a gringo the same ride equally in dollars or pesos. You just tell them no, pesos. And go from there. Outside the airport, no issue at all. Very nice taxi drivers, very reasonable fares. Even when you have the hotel call a taxi for you, it's still at a resonable, not "captive", rate.
Any comments re: UBER use in Lima? |
all I can say is that when we arrived at midnight after flying from LAX through MIA and having a problem with my luggage I was just too happy to have a driver waiting outside with my name on it to take me right to the hotel. No hassle!

I turned on my UBER app while recently transiting LIM and noticed there were a few options, including Uber Playa - no idea what that is.
Any comments re: UBER use in Lima? I think UberPlaya is supposed to be a smaller car, but I noticed all the cars would show up no matter what option you picked (could always pick uberX and would get the same car as if I decided to pay more for the Uber black) Most drivers just had new Corollas or Hyundais. I wasn't able to get one at the airport, so I got to go through the usual song and dance of getting told 100 soles is "such a good deal" to get into town, and wait til someone bites at 65... but once you're in the city it was never too hard to find a car. |
