Probably an undiscovered huge treasure in Machu Picchu
Unfortunately I have not found this topic in english, just this article in spanish.
Apparently they have discovered in a section of the city, under the ground, using Ground-penetrating radars (GPR), a burial chamber of someone who seems a very, very important person. Archeologists presume it can't be a priest or similar, it must be a great panaca or Inca. So they are already supposing it could be Pachacutec (the "Alexander the Great" of the Inca empire, responsible of its huge expansion in South America). It also mentions a possible substantial amount of gold and silver. It also has certified the existence, behind the entrance, of a staircase lined with a gold plate, which leads precisely to the main room. I have not found any other article that mentions this, I've been looking in newspapers websites, reliable magazines, etc. However RumbosdelPeru.com seems to be a serious website. If all this becomes true, it would be the greatest archeological discovery of the century. Let's cross fingers. Unfortunately the article also mention burocratic complications (and probably personal interests  ) that are delaying the project (Peru.. oh Peru...). Let's pray!! Possible treasure at Machu Picchu For those who are going to MP soon, you may check the picture with the red arrow, that indicates the location. |
Wow, exciting. Wouldn't that be something! And something to compete with Senor Sipan.

The article suggests it could also contain the gold and silver from Coricancha temple, that the incas brought to protect them from the spaniards, but I think that's improbable, and full speculation yet. According to history, Atahualpa give them lot of gold to recue himself (uselessly), and later the conquerers looted everything. I doubt the incas got time to save something from Coricancha. Anyway in that case the treasure would be unimaginable. |
Just read a few articles about this... Apparently the Dirección Regional de Cultura Cusco disagrees and rejects an investigation.

They have called Jamin an "adventurer" and since the sanctuary has been plundered many times, there is litle chance to find treasures. However not impossible, as Tutankhamun tomb was in the Valley of Kings where all tombs were already plumbered too. They are worried cause moving the stones of the wall where the frenchman says this tomb lies jeopardize the entire structure. I do remember now the mummies of the Incas were brought to Lima around 1559, cause they were worshiped, and were lost in history. Some theories said they are beneath an old building in downtown Lima but never discovered. They said Pachacutec mummy was included there. |

Is it true that any treasures uncovered will automatically become the property of Yale University? :p
