Seattle 5-Hour Layover

We will have a 5-hour layover in Seattle in late May. I have never been through SeaTac so I am unfamiliar with the airport and the city of Seattle. We are a group of 6. 2 seniors, 2 adults, and 2 kids (10 and 6) traveling from Florida to Seattle and then on to Anchorage. (A very long day...) So two questions:

1) Is it feasible to grab Uber/taxi and head downtown for 2ish hours? If so what do you recommend if we only have limited time with seniors and children?

2) Are there lounges we can pay for in the Seattle airport that might be more worthwhile? ( we have Capital One Venture and my in-laws have Delta Amex if that helps)

#1 is easily achievable so long as everyone is reasonably mobile.

If weather and traffic are good — Uber to Pike Place Market, enjoy the sights and stalls and get something to eat. Walk north along the waterfront to the Olympic Sculpture Park which has outstanding views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. Uber back.

If weather or traffic are bad — Museum of Flight is close to the airport, and usually entertains people of all ages because planes are cool.

#2 exists (Alaska lounge sells day passes for $50/pp, $25 if you have their credit credit). Value is subjective, but I would not personally consider it worth the money.

What time of day would this be? Weekday or weekend? Which airline(s)? Security lines at SEA can be terrible, especially on cruise days (Fri-Mon) and with a big party with kids having to queue for an hour to get back airside could be a major pain.

The Pike Place market is enjoyable but can be quite chaotic during cruise season - very crowded and increasingly touristy. It's best in the early mornings which probably won't apply in your case. An alternative, one that can be fun and educational, is a visit to Uwajimaya, Seattle's iconic pan-Asian grocery and department store, located in the International District just south of the downtown core. Uwajimaya is like an instant immersion into the Pacific Rim. Play "name that vegetable" in the produce section, shop for weird Japanese snacks for the travels ahead, have a meal in the cool food court that features stalls from numerous Asian countries. Everybody might get a kick out of visiting a branch of Kinokuniya, Japan's biggest bookstore, located right in the same building. It has more than books - cool gifts and other fun things. I know that touring a supermarket doesn't sound like much of a crowd pleaser, but trust me, Uwajimaya is different.

Day passes are no longer available in the Seattle Alaska Lounges. So #2 is off the table.

The Museum of Flight is amazing and would be my first choice for a short layover.

The downtown option is more iffy because you won't know about traffic problems until you are caught in them.

On a Tuesday. Flying Alaska Airlines. Landing in Seattle at 11:30am. Departing flight leaves at 4:25pm. Everyone has PreCheck.

I will definitely look into the Museum of Flight as an option as well. My kids would love it. Thank you.

The cafe at the MoF is surprisingly good and the gift shop is awesome. If you choose the MoF get there asap because two hours will be the bare minimum and maybe too short. Look at their website and set priorities in advance.

Well... nevermind! I just received a notice that we now only have a 55-minute layover... eek. Is that enough time in SEA to change planes?

Sure, if it's Alaska both coming and going.

yes

Alaska is mainly C, D, and N gates. They are linked by a train line. The trains are in the N island ( must use train to access) far/ high end of C gates, and low numbers of D gates. If you transfer from N to D be careful because when you exit the train at D one way is the security exit to baggage claim . the other takes you above to D concourse.

your flight will probably change again. It’s generally stable once you are within 60 days of flight date.

Seattle is easy todo on a long layover. It’s about 25 min by cab/uber/Lyft but traffic dependent. 45 min by light rail to main downtown area a few blocks from Pike Place. Seattle airport has a baggage hold location in baggage claim area. Downtown area also has art museum and aquarium among other places. The Boeing museum is not easily accessible by light rail but it’s about half the drive time from the airport.

if you have a little longer layover. In the central area there is a small shopping mall and food court area inside security between the C/D/N and A/B/S. It runs between the C/D split and A/B split. Concourses have stuff. Alaska N gates is relatively new with a major redesign completed.
