Help wrong name on SAA Ticket

Hello,

Does anyone have suggestions for changing a name on the ticket? My step son booked a flight on SAA through the Internet. When doing his reservation a letter in his last name was omitted. He has a double letter in his last name and one of the letters is missing. He is flying out of IAD on SAA. However he is flying to IAD on another airline so he can not go to the airport to change his ticket as SAA does not fly out of his local airport. He tried calling and they want to charge him over $400.00.

Is there anyway to rectify this without paying over $400.00.

While I have no experience with SAA, my generaly experience with misspellings on tickets is that they are not a big deal unless you make a big deal out of them.

I'm pretty sure there won't be a problem, I have flown on SAA with one letter being omitted from my name and nobody queried it.
