Another SAA Chief Joins Exodus

"THE exodus of senior managers from South African Airways (SAA) continued at the weekend with the resignation of Johan van Jaarsveld, executive vice-president for the national airline's customer services.

Van Jaarsveld will be replaced on an acting basis by vice-president for flight operations Jan Blake. Onkgopotse Tabane, vicepresident for communication and government liaison at SAA, said yesterday that Blake would remain in this post until new CEO Khaya Ngqula had decided on the airline's management structure.

Van Jaarsveld's resignation follows closely on the resignation of CE Andre Viljoen in July and other senior managers in the past year. Viljoen's resignation came two years before the end of his contract in 2006.

Government and SAA said Viljoen's resignation was not linked to the airline's R15bn loss over the past two years, a significant portion of which came from SAA's hedging programme. No reason was given for Van Jaarsveld resignation, but it is believed transformation at SAA meant his department's sphere of influence had diminished .

Last year SAA's former chief financial director, Richard Forson, resigned abruptly in what aviation analysts believed was a move related to the parastatal's R6bn hedging loss.

The loss resulted in the national carrier being declared technically insolvent, forcing government to issue a R3,5bn guarantee to the airline's lenders.

Other officials who have resigned recently include former communications and marketing executive Victor Nosi, SAA technical CE Vince Raseroka, human resources head Vusi Dlamini and Siza Mzimela, head of global sales and Voyager, the airline's loyalty programme.

Their resignations were linked to SAA's restructuring process, designed to cut down the management structure to only six executives.

At the time of resignations of Raseroka and Nosi in March last year, Viljoen said they had resigned to pursue their private business interests and that their departures were not linked to restructuring of the management team. However, in November last year the airline unveiled a new streamlined management structure, with six executive vice-presidents and a deputy CEO."
