Ethiopian takes delivery of first 737 Max 8

The first Ethiopian 737 Max 8 has been delivered and entered service on 03JUL18.

The aircraft (ET-AVM) has so far done flights to Bujumbura and Nairobi and for now will be deployed interchangeably with the 737-800 fleet.

You can tell if your flight is supposed to be on the Max if the seat map shows row 34 (standard 737-800s have only 33 rows). The aircraft is in 16/144 configuration as opposed to 16/138 for the standard 737-800s.

Just got off of this plane today. Was deployed last minute on ADD-LLW (ET877)

Had that new plane smell!

There were some issues with the IFE (screens would pop down every time an FA or the pilot made an announcement), and the new in-flight streaming entertainment seemed to have limited options - but worked quite well.

Wow, lucky you! :)

Were you in Cloud Nine or Economy? If the latter, how was the seat pitch? I see they are using slimline seats to fit an extra row into Economy.

How was the Economy galley/lav layout? Are they using the same slimline lavs that have raised so much controversy on the AA 737-Max 8s?

Was in economy - I was seated in the exit row (Row 18), so didn't really notice any difference in pitch. And to be honest, had just come off an overnight long-haul so wasn't paying too much attention.

I did notice the seating fabric had a new pattern to it. On the bulkhead divider between cloud 9 and economy, there seemed to be more crew/cabin storage on either side (I recall there was usually only storage on one side previously). Thinking back, the economy lav did seem to be quite narrow, so I'm assuming they are the same slimline lavs. Should've paid a bit more attention / took some photos ;)

One other thought - While the new overhead bins are quite nice, FAs will need to ensure roller bags are stored properly or else they fill up really quickly. Also, the overhead bin above the exit rows on the J-K-L side is home to the BlueBox in Flight Entertainment Wifi, the infant life jackets and the demonstration kits - therefore storage space is more restricted.

I saw on the video posted to ET's youtube that Cloud Nine has IFE, but does economy have it as well ? If not, is there personal device streaming ?

On the 737 Max 8 it is personal device streaming in economy using BlueBox inflight wifi. Gets turned on after the initial climb. The program options are much more limited than their long-haul seat-back IFE however.

I flew in economy so did not get to test out the Cloud Nine offering, but based on the fact that the seats in Cloud Nine have their own seat back screens they might be running on a different system.
