Upgrading on ET ticket stock, originally booked through NH

Strange circumstance - I booked my wife an award ticket EWR-KGL using NH miles J outbound, Y return due to no availability. Paid the full J R/T price to upgrade if availability opened.

On the outbound EWR-ADD, the plane went mechanical in LFW, we had to overnight and were rebooked ADD-KGL two days later. The tickets were reissued on ET 071 stock.

Now there is availability on the return but NH can no longer see the ticket or make any changes. Can call ET, but assume they have no cause to process the upgrade.

Any suggestions of how to approach? Many thanks!

Once the ticket was exchanged and reissued on ET 071 stock, NH has no further control of the ticket. Effectively, ET has already billed NH for the return flights at the time of the exchange transaction and you are now considered only an ET passenger. Whatever you paid NH for the ticket doesn't matter to ET - they lifted/exchanged a Y class coupon issued by NH so they have been paid for Y class only.

The only recourse you may have now is to seek a refund of the miles between Y/J from NH on the basis that you only flew in Y class. However, neither NH nor ET are able to modify the booking as it stands right now (viz. Y class ticket reissued into Y class).
