Anyone with recent experience on the 777-200LR between VIE and ADD? Just booked an award. Based on the above, looks like all 777 will have lie flat seats. Is there any risk of a plan swap spoiling my plans to impress my wife?

With very rare exceptions, the ET-AT* subfleet (6/9 of the flat bed equipped aircraft) is used only on shorter sectors and not on the transatlantic flights. Only the 3 ET-AS* aircraft are used regularly to North America and also have flat beds. Most of the North America flights are with ET-AO* and ET-AR* aircraft that have the angled seats.

Only the 3 ET-AS* aircraft are used regularly to North America and also have flat beds. Most of the North America flights are with ET-AO* and ET-AR* aircraft that have the angled seats.

It seems that beginning early-2020 that Ethiopian are replacing the 777 used on the Washington Dulles (IAD) route with a 787. I just booked a flight in June 2020 and, despite it showing up as a 777 on United's website (where I booked with miles) and on Google flights, it is in fact a 787 being used. A 787 is shown on ET's website. I spot checked some dates using Expert Flyer and it seems that around Jan 2020 it's going to be a 787 route.
I sure hope I get a fully flat bed model when I fly. I'm tempted to cancel and switch to an airline and/or route that guarantees a lie-flat. ET is using an A350 for YYZ.

I have a ET flight next week. How far in advance does ET assign a specific plane (tail number) to the flight and where would I get that tail number for an upcoming flight? I checked on planefinder site but it only seems to show tail numbers of past flights. Thanks.

I am assuming you are flying from BKK because of your name, they don't release the tail numbers until the flight leaves from ADD so you won't know until then. I tracked tail numbers used from September 2018 - September 2019 and the percentage of lie-flat seats for the BKK - ADD Flight was only 17% over that period, but there was no obvious pattern.

Two weeks ago, I flew on a pair of 788's. ET-AOO was the (much) longer leg. It had angled flatbeds, but a wide-open footwell. ET-ASG had true lie-flat seats, but the footwell was very cramped. It also seemed better maintained, even though it was not operating a marquee route. After having the opportunity to think about the flights, I think I prefer the angle-flat seats simply because I could stretch out without squishing my feet.
On a separate note, I enjoyed the catering ex-ADD. To my relatively unsophisticated palate (2-3 Ethiopian meals per year over the last 30 years), the food was quite good.

Ah, I know we call three economy seats together "hobo business class" , but had to share this photo from an ET domestic night flight. We were in the first row of regular economy and this gentleman created his own sleep pod.
