Always bid only the minimum amount. If the seat is available, you will get it.

I second this, but you can track the seat map / fare bucket count on Expertflyer and get an idea about how full the flight is. If it's getting crowded, you can switch to 3-notches up, meaning 3 steps over minimum and probably increase your chances by a good degree.

Thanks for the info, will track with expert flyer to see how many seats are available and start at the bottom. Will they tell you if you have been outbid or will you just miss out? I also booked the two seats beside me just in case. Is itnposible to increase your bid if they do tell you? Thanks again

Ooh... not sure exactly how that will play out with their system. When you have multiple pax within the same booking, you have to bid for all or none. How they register your extra seat booking - I have no idea if that will influence this on a system level. Maybe they will not allow you to bid, maybe you will have to pay 3x if you win or maybe it's fine. Let us know

I've only won, so I don't know what they tell or not tell, but with other airlines I know it's just a "Sorry" about 6 hours before departure.

Hey all, another data point for the upgrade auction. Bid LHR-ADD the other day (a350 Safran Optima), USD730 accepted T-24h.
Have been told repeatedly by A3 since, however, that they won't credit miles to my M+B account as I flew in Z on ET (a non earning fc) despite booking in K, would be interested to hear others' experience crediting miles to *A programs following a successful upgrade!

Last time I got a successful bid was in Feb 2020. Original ticket BRU-ADD, booking class K Economy. I still got my full miles with M&B.

I have another question. There is another section in the app where instead of the bid it gives upgrade offers that you can book immediately and you get it secured.

my question is: are these real upgrades in that you get upgrades to class C, D, J, etc meaning you get business class miles with Miles & Bonus?

so I have bid for an upgrade on one leg ADD-GBE and was successful. The original Economy L class miles have been added to my M&B account.

I have never done it through the website but I did once buy a same-day confirmed upgrade to C from ADD to LHR by walking up to the transfer desk at Bole, asking for an upgrade and handing over my credit card. Price was similar to what I've paid on successful bid to upgrades into LHR and miles were credited as full C class miles to my M+B!

I've been bidding on an upcoming flt, but i keep getting outbid and now the price is out of my range. I checked expertflyer and only 1/3 of the business class seat are taken. The flt leaves in 2 weeks. Question is, should i just leave the bid as where it is even though I'm not in first place. Will i still get a win coming in second? Or will they just leave the seats empty and deny the upgrade?

Curious how you are using ExpertFlyer to check Ethiopian award availability? I dropped them as they no longer show Star Alliance awards.

What do you mean "getting outbid"? You don't find out the results of your bid until 48 hrs before the flight.

you can enter your flt details in expert flyer and it will show you the current seats allocated for business and economy, it's a great tool.

My flt had the bid offer up until a month ago then it changed to live bid, it's like bidding on ebay, you just increase you bid until in first place, it's live so you can see if you are going to be in first place.
