Reporting:

I flew DME-ADD-JNB and JNB-ADD-DME

DME-ADD min. bid ~600USD
ADD-JNB guaranteed upgrade 500USD

JNB-ADD guaranteed upgrade 500USD
ADD-DME guaranteed upgrade 581USD

I flew business JNB-ADD-DME, I got upgraded for service recovery on JNB-ADD and bought the upgrade outright on ADD-DME because it made sense even though it's a bit pricy.

I think guaranteed upgrades are offered exactly a week before departure provided Business Class is very undersold. JNB-ADD business was mostly full, ADD-DME business almost empty, all middle 2 seaters empty and only windows occupied, mostly by one person.

Best of luck to everyone!

P.S.: Ethiopian really loves operational changes so be on the lookout for that. Also, some 787s suck compared to other configurations. 4A and 4L missing a window.

Still 3 days to departure, I got a "You have been outbid..." mail. Stil *7 seats in most biz buckets on Expertflyer. Is this just a standard mail just because some geezer apparently bid higher? 4 pax, so I would think they'd take that before that geezer, if it came down to last 4 seats.

add-mpm = 405$ (b788)
dss-add = 560$ (a359)
add-vie = 440$ (b772)

Can confirm what alexei17 said about last minute aircraft swaps , 50% of my recent flights had such change

Is the cash upgrade bid option only available on cash Y tickets, or is it also possible for *A awards in Y?

No. Only on 071-stock revenue tickets.

Thank you; I saw your original post from 2017, was hoping ET's terms had changed, but seems not.

Ethiopian Bid to Upgrade

I place a bid to upgrade from economy to business on my Ethiopian Airlines flight from Chicago to Addis Ababa. I just received an email asking if I want to upgrade. I clicked the link and see from the "real time bidder" I am currently the highest bidder. Now I'm wondering if I should go in and lower my bid. If there are multiple available seats will they choose runner up bidders too? This is my first time trying this airlines upgrade system.

As B747-437B said, there is another thread on this topic. My personal experience (and theory) is that even the lowest bids will be accepted as long as there are free seats. Certain routes very often have full business class, others rarely do. I have multiple times been upgraded on minimum bid or bid $ 10-20 above minimum. I have never noticed any real-time bidding visible there, perhaps a new function? Either way, they cannot know far out how many seats are available, so likely just a "show" to get you to increase the price.

Hey all, an extra data-point for the upgrade auction:

LHR-ADD (A359, Safran Optima seats) a few days ago for 730 USD, accepted T-6 hrs. I bid the minimum possible amount which I thought was still quite steep considering a few posts I'd seen here about LHRADD / other similar duration Europe-ADD legs with lower costs. FWIW, also marginally more expensive than the confirmed upgrade that a friend bought on the day at the transfer desk in ADD from ADD-LHR a couple months back.

Interesting - my father-in-law was offered $530 for the same sector, but his original booking was in "S" class

Yeah, I guess that might be the difference. I was in H (discounted), whereas S seems to be full-fare.
