Discount hotel websites are under assault as the big hotel chains fight to get travelers out of the habit of booking at third-party sites. In most cases, their weapons are one or another form of low rate guarantee.

Ramada's version is called the Guaranteed Best Available Rate or It's Free. Those who make reservations at www.Ramada.com or call 800-272-6232 and then find a lower publicly available rate for the same hotel accommodation and date on another website, receive their first night free.

There are terms and conditions, detailed online. For example, the offer excludes rates that require membership, association rates or other negotiated rates.

I found a better rate, submitted it, and received a response in a few hours, "After reviewing your claim, you will be receiving a free night stay at this Ramada property."
This also applies to other hotel chains including Howard Johnson, Days Inn, Wingate, Super 8 and several others.

This price guarantee thing is a SCAM. I just booked a hotel room at ramada.com last night and found a better deal on another website.

At first, the Ramada representative sent me an email indicating that they can find the rate but couldn't book it. I went back and tried and I was able to get to to the point I've to enter the credit card info. I emailed back and indicating that at which point did the reservation not go through? Then the representative emailed back and indicated that the only rate she can find is actually $3 higher than the Ramada.com rate. I was appalled and went ahead and cancelled the Ramada reservation and booked otherwise.
