Avani Sukhumvit Bangkok
I had a quick stay at Avani Sukhumvit to try this property and compare with the other two Avani hotels in Bangkok. This hotel was opened less than two years ago so the hardware is new and modern and of similar quality as Avani+ Riverside, both of which are much nicer than the aging Avani Atrium. People on a budget could find this hotel to be a good choice but there are compromises to make, for example the location is not central, suite upgrades are very unlikely, and the hotel does not have an executive lounge.
Room
I booked the entry level room and received a two-category upgrade to a Deluxe room which is a bit more spacious (37 sqm) than the lowest two room types (26 sqm). My room was in the corner of the building and had the extra advantage of not sharing a wall with a neighbor because the fire staircase was between my room and the next to last room at the end of the hallway. I did not see any suites on the hotel website so I thought they don’t have suites at all however when chatting with staff at reception I found out that they have two suites which are actually rooms that they connected with each other so I presume 52 sqm perhaps. They have not marketed those suites on the website yet but anyway a hotel with 382 total rooms and only 2 suites is unlikely to be a property where we could expect generous suite upgrades with regularity in the future so for that reason, I would be more tempted to stay there when travelling solo than as a couple. The room looked great and was in excellent condition as can be expected for a new hotel. I liked that it was very bright particularly in the bathroom because of the huge window in front of the bathroom sink and counter, but as a couple it would be required to draw the blinds down with the electric controls because the toilet was looking straight out that window into the bedroom without any door; for a solo traveler, this will be a non-issue. The bathroom also had a large stand-alone shower with excellent water pressure in addition to a separate bathtub, and similar to other Avani hotels they had Malin & Goetz amenities. A minor flaw of the room was that air conditioning could not lower the temperature below 21C even on full blast all night. I would not say the room was hot, but I wish it could have been a tick lower. As my GHA Black welcome amenity there were two beers in the mini-fridge upon my arrival.
Location
The restaurant closed due to covid so I could not have breakfast or dinner there. That said it was not a big issue because the hotel is directly connected to a shopping mall which has lots of restaurants and also a grocery store (Tops) in the basement.
The location of the hotel is quite out of the way but it’s immediately next to On Nut BTS sky train station on the Sukhumvit line so it’s easy access to public transportation. It is 7 stops away from Ploen Chit station which could be considered city center and you get there in 20 minutes. I liked the convenience of walking out of the hotel straight into the shopping mall, but for most people the location will not be a plus. Personally if I am going to be out of the way, I prefer the location of Avani+ Riverside because of the river views.
Service
For such a short stay and without a restaurant, gym, or lounge, obviously I did not have many touch points with staff so it’s hard to comment about service. That said my limited interactions with staff were all positive. One of the reasons I booked at this hotel was because of GHA’s 6pm late check-out for Black members which I needed, which can work better than other hotel chains which only guarantee late check-out until 2pm or 4pm. Obviously with low occupancy they had no problem honoring my request.
GHA Local Experiences
The GHA local experiences available at this hotel leave to be desired, the only one available was transportation to the airport. Perhaps in non-covid times they have more variety to offer.
Wifi
Wifi worked great with speed of 140 Mbps.
Overall
Overall Avani Sukhumvit is a nice hotel with good quality rooms at a modest price. For solo travelers who need to be in this part of the city it should be a no brainer, otherwise for better chances of a suite upgrade and central location there are better options.
