I have been trying to find out more info on RyanAir's apparent expansion into the TA market (http://www.cbc.ca/consumer/story/200...satlantic.html). Is there any update on when this will take place? I tried searching the forums, but I think I may be entering the wrong search query (ryanair new york). I imagine they won't do anything till the Open Skies goes into effect, right?

With entrants like Zoom, I don't see that they can do anything better except maybe have a few anecdotical seats at 1 pound, and with their world famous customer service, they would be doomed. Easyjet ? That would be a whole new ballgame, and more welcome.

There were numerous discussions on this topic several months ago in the BA and I think the AA forum. Have you searched those forums for more info? Is so, I wouldn't think that any more details have been released after those posts were active a couple of months ago.

Ryan Air are looking to do a two-class service (!) and operating the 787 dreamliner. There is the suggestion that they are in the market for fifty of these aircraft..... I would suggest that it would be many years before this gets off the ground....

What 2 classes ? Economy and Lie Flat (on the floor, no seats) ?
50 787s represent a lot of tray tables to advertise on for junk food, viagra, condoms, suntan oil and all the goodies for a good vacation...

Seriously: Whoever has endured Ryanair for 2 hours will not take it for 8.

Yes ... the British newspapers this week had the charming story of a poor woman who got airsick and vomited over the back of the seat in front of her then on the floor as she rushed to the toilet.
Ryanair staff kindly made no attempt to help her or clean up the mess for the duration of the flight.
Surely life is too short to have to endure a Ryanair flight no matter how cheap it is ?

I thought that the problem with this kind of LCC transatlantic dream is that the main thing keeping the existing carriers and their routes afloat is the high revenue business class passenger. Without these, the economy passengers are not enough profit to sustain such routes. And why would a business traveler (even a very cheap one) want to gamble with Ryanair or similar?

I might someday be tempted to try one of these carriers just out of curiosity, but only within Europe on something shorter than 2 hours. But never, on a transatlantic flight where you depend on the the crew to give you a level of service beyond just aiming to get the passengers off the plane and the next turnaround. Plus, although I'm sure their safety is up to a standard, I don't like the idea of the cheapest maintenance and crew (disgruntled from low pay) on such a long flight. Not that some legacy carriers aren't cutting back too, but with Ryanair, you just know how bad it's going to be.

I don't know about what it would be on long-haul flights, but I recall reading that maintenance for Lufthansa and Ryanair is both handled by the same contracted outfit.

Clearly there are disgruntled and unhappy crew from most airlines working flights today. I'm not sure Ryanair is doing any worse in this respect.
