Ryanair allows mobile phone use in flight

According to the BBC Ryanair is to allow mobile phones to be used in-flight. Blackberries too! It's bad enough on trains, let alone aeroplanes. It's very rare that a call can not wait. Last week on SG I overheard someone on the seat phone calling their wife because they didn't know whether to take the Krug or Dom!

So do we want them on BA or not is my question?

It's the main headline in today's London Lite, one of the two new free London afternoon papers.

Its inevitable. However I think it will be a while before its introduced on charter flights I would imagine. Thats when you have to start worrying.....

He's done it again! Looking forward to the advertising... Plane full of naked people on the phone?!

I was always told that it was the Irish government authority that prevented mobiles being used on planes at any time 'for reasons of passenger safety'. No doubt there is no danger any more...

I love the final paragraph:-

There are worries that passengers bellowing "Hello, I'm on the plane" into their handsets could make for unpleasant journeys.

I thought flying with Ryanair guaranteed an unpleasant journey!

Indeed - it so you can be comforted by your loved one at home who can take your mind off the flight itself.

"Honey I'm on Ryanair again, Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp! "

Depends how much they'll charge you for the service. If it was quite expensive, enough to deter people from using their phone unnnecessarily, I suppose a case could be made.

But a businessman, who didn't have to pay the cost personally, yabbering away for the whole flight would get pretty annoying I daresay.

NNNOoooooooooo!!!

I really do not want mobiles on flights - well maybe at a pinch on long haul - but do people really need to be in touch for an hour's flight?

"Honey we went round the stack three times instead of 4 so I'll be home a little later"

"John - just thought I'd phone to find out whether anything has happened with the project in the last ten minutes since I last called you".

".......which escort agency. I thought you were supposed to never call clients direct....."

But surely it could be useful for those times when Ryanair's just kidnapped you?

Agree with this being a bad move - flying is one of the few times you get a bit of peace and quiet these days....

I may be about to bring the wrath of Khan's evil brother on me, but why is it worse to have people on a plane talking into a phone that talking to a colleague, wife, partner, child... etc who you are travelling with?

Provided one is talking at a respectful level into a phone I don't see the problem. FAs could announce that phones my be used but that people speaking too loudly might be asked to tone it down...

QF are apparently contemplating an in-flight mobile trial, discussed recently on the QF Board.

Personally, I don't believe it will be used as frequently as we're perhaps anticipating. All my travels are leisure orientated, but for those of you who do travel frequently for business I would have imagined that once the plane doors are closed it offers a welcome break from the calls/emails and give you a chance to enjoy the service of First/Club etc.. or, ahem, do some work without the interruptions?

In theory, perhaps; however, in actuality, we can expect numerous conversations inevitably being peppered with [repeated] dialogues similar to:

"[blah, blah....] Hello. Hello! HELLO, CAN YOU HEAR ME? HELLO?! CAN YOU HEAR ME?! Ok, I CAN HEAR YOU NOW."

The option has been around for ages though - I've hardly ever seen the in flight phones used and I myself have only ever made one short call this way (ignoring some deal I tapped into in the late 90's on NW). I assume this is because the price is set correctly (i.e. almost too high) and the costs associated with installing whatever kit will have to be recovered from the roaming fees. I can't imagine this is going to be less than a couple of quid a minute to be honest, perhaps closer to £5.

(Possibly the saving grace - do pay as you go services offer roaming? )
