Norwegian closing bases in RI and NY

https://www.providencejournal.com/ne...-green-airport

Hi,

Found out today that Norwegian is closing their bases in PVD and Stewart, NY. What does that really mean? They say flights will continue through the summer. I am flying them next month and I hope that there are no cancellations for those passengers who already have booked their flights.

Does anyone have any insight on this?

Thank you

ML

This article mentions the closures start in April

It's 5 crew bases and 3 pilot bases being cut. SWF, PVD, FCO, PMI, LPA and TCI for crew, and AMS, BKK and FLL for pilots.

Correct. They're just closing crew/pilot bases, not necessarily cancelling service to those cities.
Airlines open and close crew bases - that doesn't mean they cancel service to those cities.
American Airlines has closed hubs in San Jose, Reno, St Louis, and Raliegh-Durham over the years. They still have service to those cities.

They will be canceling services. Exactly which ones haven’t been announced, save for no additional cuts to TATL beyond those already announced (EDI/BFS to SWF/PVD).

That seems like a lot of crew bases for this airline.

I contacted Norwegian in this matter today and I have been told that this is "fake news" (literally!), they would continue to serve these airports.
However I don't think so.. I have a booking for DUB-SWF for September and would like to reorganize my trip to NY. But as long as I don't have a confirmation of cancellation, I don't know whether I should look for an alternative.

Well let's be honest - the wheels are falling off of the operation. I would think that they'll need additional capital in order to cure their impending breach of bond covenants - assuming they haven't already breached covenants. Their fuel hedges, which have not done well this last quarter, should have drained more than enough capital to breach the covenants even before getting into quarterly losses. And they still plan on taking delivery of more aircraft and growing their fleet in 2019 and claim that they have the funding to do so. Unless they have a secret money tree farm, I don't see how that can be true.

Well, something tells me that if I'm going to fly overseas, I better fly on a legacy carrier rather than Norwegian.
