The only thing I see for tomorrow is SFO-ARN via KEF on FI in the $700's. That is a 21-hour journey including 10 hours at KEF. Other options involve lousier connections (SVO and IST respectively). These would involve a refund of whatever the Norwegian ticket is and preservation of the return in the process.

You might do some further research for other connections points in the US and Europe.

They will then be left with an EC 261/2004 fight over the delay and the possibility that the carrier will not be solvent by the time it gets dealt with.

Yup. My ATH-JFK flight on Sept. 22 is now Hi-Fly. But am correcting in thinking that if in premium, it's actually a much better seat?

I tried to convince them to just pony up for a different airline today but without any other good options they're booked on OAK-FCO-ARN tomorrow, losing a day of vacation. I'm going to try to convince them to book a backup ticket on something in case the FCO flight gets canceled tomorrow and they're in the same situation again.
Aren't you glad that you chose to buy a Norwegian ticket?
Don't worry, your situation is nothing out of the ordinary, and this should prepare you for your next flight on them...

I haven't flown them before but family and friends have had good experiences with them in the past so we booked generally expecting it to be fine. I had hoped that by fall 2019 they'd have gotten a handle on the RR maintenance issues - this has been a few years now right? - and have figured out how to plan a schedule they can actually fly with the 787s they have. Evidently I was wrong.

My wife is regretting booking our return on Norwegian. Hopefully it will be fine but I'll be watching closely and ready to book something else if anything looks fishy. It's been a nice novelty having the extensive (for a while) Euro service at OAK but I don't think we'll book it again in the future.

I ultimately convinced them to cancel their Norwegian flight last night, which they were able to do after 90 min on the phone. Rebooked today with 60k Amex->Aeroplan->Swiss award SFO-ZRH-ARN, aisle and window seats with an empty middle and better timing. Approximately infinity times better than separate middle seats on Norwegian, 6 hour layover in Rome, and getting into Stockholm after midnight.

After this adventure, not wanting to spend our whole trip wondering if our return Norwegian flight will happen, we bailed on our refundable Premium CDG-OAK tickets and booked CDG-YYC-SFO WestJet business class last night. I feel much better now.

CDG-YYJ-SFO ?
I think there's a typo in there since neither CDG nor SFO have nonstop flights to Victoria.
