TP85 - A332 CF6 engine shut down briefly after take-off

According to avherald:

A TAP Air Portugal Airbus A330-200, registration CS-TOO performing flight TP-85 from Lisbon (Portugal) to Sao Paulo Guarulhos,SP (Brazil) with 268 people on board, was climbing out of Lisbon's runway 03 when the crew declared Mayday and stopped the climb at 3000 feet reporting an engine (CF6) failure. The aircraft subsequently climbed to 5000 feet and entered a hold. The aircraft dumped fuel and returned to Lisbon for a safe landing on runway 03 about one hour after departure.

Lisbon police reported debris off the aircraft damaged a number of vehicles in Camarate just north of the runway end.

The airline confirmed an engine malfunction, however said it was not an engine explosion.

According to the local press, the police found approximately 30 pieces of debris, the largest of which had 4 cm. There was no record of anyone injured on board or on the ground.

TP press release on the subject:

TAP announces that flight TP 085, which operated this morning from Lisbon to São Paulo, having left Lisbon at 10:10, had to return to Lisbon airport shortly after take-off, due to a failure in a turbine of one of the reactors of the plane.

The landing took place in Lisbon safely. At this time, it is planned that 268 passengers follow journey to Sao Paulo in another aircraft of the company, departing at about 18:10.

The reactor in question is part of a set whose maintenance is responsibility of the manufacturer, General Electric, not having been detected until the time of take-off today any sign that would justify an intervention in addition to routine inspections.

The situation is under investigation by the manufacturer, followed by TAP Maintenance & Engineering, in order to identify the causes of the occurrence. The fault caused a noise out of the ordinary, although there has been no explosion, and the safety of the operation has not been jeopardized.

Regarding the problem occurred with the turbine, and although the engine failure has been contained, not causing any damage to the plane, the projection of some debris by the exhaust nozzle was found.

Any damages resulting therefrom shall be borne by TAP - See more at: http://www.tapportugal.com/PressRele....k8Uld4MW.dpuf
