Got deposit back: Am I in the clear?!?

Rented a car from Advantage last week. The car had a tiny chip in the windshield when I got it. Didn't notice until after I left so did not notate it on the damage form. Sure enough the chip later turned into about a foot long crack.

When I went to return it my plan was to talk to them and tell them that it was chipped when I got it and it only spread. I didn't end up doing this though it was very busy when I returned it and they guy barley looked at the car and didn't say anything. I figured since I didn't notate on the form they could charge me either way if they want. They took a $100 deposit when I rented the car and they have now refunded it to me.

Am I in the clear now? I know they could just as easy send me a bill in a month... but I figured since it was only a windshield they probably would have kept the deposit and charged me for the rest.

If they checked you in then you will not be charged. Since there is no proof that you turned it in that way.
Also if you do not note existing damage they can charge you for it when you return the car. Since there is no proof that it was there when you took possession. If the damage was large then you could ask to view the previous renters contract.
It is better to use a credit card that has nsurance and have them battle with the rent-a-car company.
