Pakistan International Airlines Airbus A320 crashes near Karachi Airport, May 22
A passenger jet flying from Lahore to Karachi has crashed into buildings near Karachi Airport, with casualties reported. Pakistan’s prime minister, Imran Khan, has promised an investigation after a passenger plane with 98 people onboard crashed near Karachi, with dozens believed to have been killed. The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight PK8303 was on a routine domestic service from Lahore to Karachi, and was almost at the end of the 90-minute flight when it crashed on the approach to Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport. |
Yes just seen another report saying 98 dead. A fluid situation as regards reporting. Condolences to all the families. A320 was the aircraft

There is a press release on PIA's website giving basic data only.
Flight number was PK8303 which departed Lahore at 1308 local time, operated by AP-BLD, an Airbus A320-214 carrying 91 pax and a crew of 2 / 6 for a total (presumed) 99 souls on board. Presumably this will be updated by PIA as more info becomes available. |
This is really really sad, especially how Eid is in just a few days...

Deepest condolences, what a tragic event so close to the Eid festival and the fact that the aircraft was a mere 200m away from the runway at Karachi Jinnah International.

Hopefully it wasn't what some were saying. Inadvertent gear up landing. Looking at photos it looks like the engines have scoring on the undersides. What I heard on the Live ATC doesn't sound very professional. Even the before the go around radio transmissions weren't remotely iaco standard. ATC giving them a heading when they were already established on the ils? what the heck.
Wild speculation but gear issue to a go around followed by no TOGA press or thrust lever advancement excessive sink rate panic go around too low contact ground leads to dual engine failure. Looking at the video looks like they held it at high AOA till ground impact, i'd say whatever envelope protections the A320 has saved them from fully stalling it in. |

Do we know what engines these were? Rolls? CFM? I couldn't find this out.
Basic logic tells you that if both engines died at such low altitude there is no room/altitude for recovery possible so their fate was sealed unfortunately. God how awful. |

The Airbus A320-214 model uses a CFM56 engine made by CFM International, a joint venture between US-based General Electric and France's Safran. IIRC, it was purchased by one of the Chinese carriers (China Eastern / Southern ?) before being purchased by PIA, and has flown several segments since Covid groundings. |

Preliminary report on PIA at Karachi crash into residential area released

On Jun 24th 2020, while introducing the preliminary report, Pakistan's Aviation Minister stated, that both flight crew and ATC failed to follow procedures, the pilots discussed Coronavirus and were not focussed on their piloting tasks, when ATC advised about altitude the crew replied they would manage it and again discussed Coronavirus. The crew was overconfident and not focussed. The captain's last three words were 'Ya Allah', 'Ya Allah', 'Ya Allah'. Extra photos in pdf linked below (preliminary report). On Jun 24th 2020 the CAA Pakistan released the preliminary report. So ..... as many of us speculated, pretty much totally operator error :mad:The CAA Pakistan described the sequence of events: On 22 May 2020 at 13:05 hrs PST, the Pakistan International Airlines aircraft Airbus A320-214, registration number AP-BLD, took off from Lahore (Allama Iqbal International Airport – AIIAP) Pakistan to perform a regular commercial passenger flight (PK8303) to Karachi (Jinnah International Airport – JIAP) Pakistan, with 8 crew members (01 Captain, 01 First Officer, and 06 flight attendants) and 91 passengers on board. At 14:35 hrs the aircraft performed an ILS approach for runway 25L and touched down without landing gears, resting on the engines. Both engines scrubbed the runway at high speed. Flight crew initiated a go-around and informed “Karachi Approach” that they intend to make a second approach. About four minutes later, during downwind leg, at an altitude of around 2000 ft, flight crew declared an emergency and stated that both engines had failed. The aircraft started losing altitude. It crashed in a populated area, short of runway 25L by about 1340 meters. An immediate subsequent post impact fire initiated. Out of 99 souls on-board, 97 were fatally injured and 02 passengers survived. On ground 04 persons were injured however 01 out of these reportedly expired later at a hospital. ... |
EASA suspends Pakistan International Airlines from Europe for six months
The European Aviation Safety Agency informed Pakistan International Airlines that it will not be allowed to operate to destinations in Europe for six months, beginning 1 July. The suspension is in part due to unsatisfactory progress on safety reforms required by EASA and in part due to recent revelations that over 100 PIA pilots had fraudulently obtained their pilot licenses.
