Booking on Air China where one person doesn't show

I have a flight booked on Air China for 3 people using United Miles. Our friend indicated that they will not be able to make the flight with us. Is it safer to call united and split the reservation so my wife and I are on one reservation and they are on the other or would it be ok for us to still travel if one passenger doesn't show?

They won't care. It's three tickets for three people and one person no-shows. If it is miles why would you not apply for a return of the miles when cancelling? Leaves one reservation with two people vs. three.

Air China will auto-split the reservation and accordingly United will cancel the ticket for your friend. You might as well proactively ask United to split in advance.
