China Airlines to lease/buy/option ~30 A321NEO

In Mandarin, https://www.chinatimes.com/realtimen...7-260410?chdtv

China Airlines will be leasing 14 A321NEO to replace it's existing Boeing 737-800 fleet.

Originally the decision is to be made between A320/NEO or MAX 8/MAX 9, but the recent crashes of the MAX has led to the NEO winning.

Currently CI operates 19 Boeing 737-800, additional leases/orders should be expected.

Wow this must be the 2nd casualty for Boeing? Boeing will need to work hard to get CI to come back to the 737max. No news yet of A350 which is still disappointing.

In Mandarin, https://tw.appledaily.com/new/realtime/20190508/1563493

According to Apply Daily, an additional 11 A321NEO will be purchased with 5 on options. Therefore, it will be totaled to 30 including options.

On top of that, a MOU of 3 firm order of 77F and 3 additional options also surfaced.

A321 is a good choice for CI. Works very well with the network... this will be the first time CI will operate a Airbus narrow body jet.

I actually thought CI will be interested in Max10 which has eclipsed the Max9 in terms of likely operating economics but the bad PR with Max8 probably sealed the deal with NEO.

CI operated two A320s a long time ago and they were short-lived:

I totally forgot about the short lease they had to covered the gap after the last 2x 737-200 retired due to noise regulation but before the first 737-800 arrived
