From my experience of AirAsia fly through (booked connecting flights as a single itinerary) you get met at the gate by a member of AirAsia staff, they have a manifest of flythrough passengers and they escort you through the connection process. If your name is not on the manifest you cannot use the transit process - I have seen a passenger try to join the transit process without being on flythrough and being denied although my experience was from a while ago

I think the key point is OP is likely to be denied boarding at HNL unless they have a visa for Malaysia.
This is based on the very strong likelihood that Air Asia in HNL won't check them through to BKK since the intended flights HNL-KUL and then KUL-BKK are not one of their 'FLY-THRU' routings. Hence, staff at HNL will view this simply as HNL-KUL, and if OP's nationality requires a visa and they don't have one, then denied boarding seemed probable.
Of course, it is up to the OP to weigh our opinions as they wish when considering whether or not to attempt this routing.
