WELCOME, MODERATOR GUIDELINES
PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING
If you are new to us, welcome to FlyerTalk!

Who we are: FlyerTalk features discussions and chat boards that covers the most up-to-date traveler information; an interactive community dedicated to the topic of travel (not politics or arguments about politics or religion, etc.)

All travelers are welcome in the community. Just choose a forum: conversing about airlines and their programs, airports, destinations, dining and how to make the most of your miles and points, or visit our Information Desk to start.

We do have some Rules, and everyone agrees to abide by these when they are granted free membership privileges. On a topic that generates a lot of feelings and perspectives, please remember "welcoming, respectful" are key words on FlyerTalk.

As with previous incident threads, please observe the following in this thread:

1. The normal FT Rules apply. (Including not discussing moderation actions on-thread). And please be particularly attentive to "discussing the idea and not the poster" when you have a disagreement. Civility and mutual respect are still expected and are what we owe each other as a community.

2. You are expected to respect our diversity, and therefore refrain from posting inflammatory comments about race, religion, culture, politics, ethnicity, orientation, etc." Do not cite, copy, or report on such.

3. Please do continue to be attentive to the sensibilities of the families of those on the flight. Think about if you were them what you would and would not want to see posted. Reasonable speculation about what happened is permissible; please, though, do not indulge in inflammatory or overly-lurid descriptions or depictions (or links to same) that could well be hurtful.

4. Overly / extravagantly exaggerative posts such as conspiracy theories, posts beyond the realm of science and known facts, etc. as well as posts with information that has been posted several times previously may be summarily deleted. Moderator actions may not be discussed in posts on FlyerTalk.

5. FlyerTalk complies with international copyright agreements. Please do not post full copyrighted articles; summarize the salient points, cite properly and post links. Entire copyrighted articles will be summarily deleted.

6. In addition, those who repeatedly fail to comply with FlyerTalk Rules or the guidelines for this thread may be subjected to FlyerTalk disciplinary actions and have membership privileges suspended, forum masks, etc.

Yes. Do you ignore the faults by non-Indonesian players?

To elaborate, if you sell something to a third-world country that is faulty, but you expect them to be able to manage because they have many failsafe measures in place, you are guilty if something goes wrong. First-world countries (and their companies) have a greater responsibility.
Boeing tries to sell to these companies and that is a large area of growth. And they sell a defective plane? Whose sensors don't work? And you expect them to know what to do? Are you kidding me?
It is like Tesla blaming the driver for using their autopilot. Except worse, because expecting faulty sensors wasn't in the instruction manual.

New NYTs article. It seems to me that Boeing's responsibility in this crash is somewhere between 50-100%.

Here's the BBC article for what it's worth. Makes for sobering reading:

Prelim accident report released:
https://cdn.geekwire.com/wp-content/.../11/prelim.pdf

On the flight immediately prior to the crash flight, the previous crew already was experiencing airspeed indicator problems, had to turn off the elevator trim system, and the stick shaker activating for the entire flight... Not good.

To me, the discrepancy regarding the number of FAs on board is also disturbing, although I'm guessing that the required number would be four, so five versus six doesn't really matter except that the count made weight and balance calculations slightly wrong.

Graphc timeline of what happened with pics of various controls in the cockpit. Well-done, but nothing new if you have been following the story.

Do we know yet whether the information on the cockpit recording black box has been recovered? Was it sent to one of the expert labs for reconstruction of the damaged parts and analysis?

Any further news on the investigation or even a hint of what was on the cockpit voice recorder?

Bloomberg: Pilot Who Hitched a Ride Saved Lion Air 737 Day Before Deadly Crash

Update from Bloomberg:
As the Lion Air crew fought to control their diving Boeing Co. 737 Max 8, they got help from an unexpected source: an off-duty pilot who happened to be riding in the cockpit.

That extra pilot, who was seated in the cockpit jumpseat, correctly diagnosed the problem and told the crew how to disable a malfunctioning flight-control system and save the plane, according to two people familiar with Indonesia’s investigation.

The next day, under command of a different crew facing what investigators said was an identical malfunction, the jetliner crashed into the Java Sea killing all 189 aboard.

The previously undisclosed detail on the earlier Lion Air flight represents a new clue in the mystery of how some 737 Max pilots faced with the malfunction have been able to avert disaster while the others lost control of their planes and crashed. The presence of a third pilot in the cockpit wasn’t contained in Indonesia’s National Transportation Safety Committee’s Nov. 28 report on the crash and hasn’t previously been reported.

Exclusive: Lion Air pilots scoured handbook in minutes before crash - sources

JAKARTA/SINGAPORE/PARIS (Reuters) - The pilots of a doomed Lion Air Boeing 737 MAX scrambled through a handbook to understand why the jet was lurching downwards in the final minutes before it hit the water killing all 189 people on board, three people with knowledge of the cockpit voice recorder contents said.
