Transferring baggage from TN to BA at LAX

So I am flying into LAX on Air Tahiti Nui and have a connecting flight on British Airways to LHR later that evening (about 11 hours later) After going through immigration do I have to collect my baggage from the carousel even if it has been tagged through to London by TN or does it automatically transfer without me touching it?
Thanks for your help

You will need to go through immigration, then claim your bags, go through customs with them in tow and then recheck them with BA even if TN tags them through to LHR.
It's US border control procedures, unfortunately there's no way around this.
I don't know if BA has a recheck facility right behind customs where you could drop it off instead of having to go to the check-in counter bag drop. At least you won't have to change terminals, so this won't be a major trek (TN and BA both operate from TBIT)

If the luggage is tagged for onward travel, you can drop it off at the recheck area which is located right after you exit customs at TBIT. You can't miss it.

Thanks for your help everyone. I usually either end my travels in LA or only have carry on so I had never encountered this problem before. It was exactly like you guys said. Just picked up my bag and and dropped if off at the recheck.
