Per http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/trave...elsewhere.html and since there is an already extant thread in the appropriate airline forum, I'll move this there and invite the senior moderators to merge or otherwise deal with, while leaving for convenience a thirty-day re-direct in Travel News

Definitely overshot the runway! Sounds like nasty weather contributed to the incident.
All 108 passengers and crew survived after a new Lion Air jet crashed into the ocean and snapped into two while attempting to land Saturday on the Indonesian resort island of Bali, injuring up to 45 people.
Lion Air, which started flying in 2000, signed a $24 billion deal last month to buy 234 Airbus planes, the biggest order ever for the French aircraft maker. It also gave Boeing its largest-ever order when it finalized a deal for 230 planes last year. The planes will be delivered from 2014 to 2026.

The USA report seems to validate your concern - it says this is the 6th Lion Air accident since 2002. Certainly not up to first world standards.

Oh, there are many, many more incidents than that, just in the last 3-4 years. Runway overshoots and the like. Might not have resulted in injuries or hull loss, but just way too much to be just "bad luck."
