Sri Lankan Airline New Business Class Seats

Just found a website showcasing the future Sri Lankan Airline Business Class Seats
http://www.ceyloncrew.co.cc/wp-conte...FLTBD-copy.jpg

Here's the link to the website:http://www.ceyloncrew.co.cc/srilanka...ainment-system

It looks really impressive, finally a top design for Sri Lankan Airline, It seems like the airline is waking up and finally breaking into the business travellers industry. Wasn't the current business class made 15 years ago? The new flatbeds seats will be placed in two of the airline’s A340 aircrafts, and four of the airline’s A330 aircrafts from May next year. The upgrade of the fleet is hoped to be completed by September 2011.

It's been over a year since I've flown Sri Lankan, and in biz class. On routes like CMB-KUL/BKK/SIN even their old product is the best biz-class product to or from CMB.

Their hard product is better than CX on BKK-CMB.

They are the ONLY airline that refunded money to me (without me even asking) because of a price reduction after purchase.

Any news on how many planes been refurbished with the new biz class product? What about the A340s will they also be refurbished or will they be retired?

I know they have been cleared to fly to YYZ via LHR, not sure that will ever happen but never say never.

Hi
the German office of Sri Lankan told me a week ago that they are currently refurbishing their A330 and their are almost through (whatever that means). after that, potentially the A340s are refurbished but I understand that this is not definitely.

So, from FRA UL is flying with A330 and A340, so I would check what airline is booked even if there are always potential changes...

From what I have gathered 3 A330's (4R ALA/ALB/ALC with ALJ currently going through the process) and 1 A340 (4R ADF) which as 24 J seats instead of the 18 on the 330's.

The oldest 340's (4R ADA, ADB & ADC) will be retired when their leases run out end of 2013 and be replaced.

Assuming all the others will be upgraded.

Still Older Seats from the Gulf

Last week I flew KWI-CMB-BKK on a 330 & 340 and neither had lie-flat seats. They told me that they were only being used for longer-haul destinations. However, considering I paid about half what the next cheapest biz-class fare was, I was content with the older seats. Since I hadn't flown UL for a number of years, I was pleasantly surprised how the calibre of service has improved. With that in mind, regardless of the seat, and provided the fares remain so reasonable, I will definitely fly them again from the Gulf to Asia.

I flew UL506 from LHR-CMB on July 15, and we upgraded to business class at check-in (GBP310 each for two people plus a GBP5 fee for paying with Amex). We were pleased to find on boarding that the aircraft was fitted with the new seats, which were really very good.

They felt spacious and as there were two of us flying together we appreciated the lack of a big divider between the seats. That said, for solo flyers I'd say there is sufficient space between them.

The only strange thing is that the electrical mechanism to change position lifts you up a fair way when switching the seat into recline or fully-flat mode. In full-flat it obviously drops back down again which is fine, but the recline mode left us perched a couple of inches above the rest of the cabin, which was a bit strange.

Return flight (UL503 CMB-LHR July 27) we didn't try to upgrade and the craft was equipped with the old-style seats which looked very dated in comparison. Both were, I think, A340-300s.

this used to happen on the AA biz class seats as well - they lift you high up and kind of forward before reclining. I guess maybe the same manufacturer!

I flew to CMB to BKK in March in an A330 and they had these new seats. But when I flew from FCO to CMB last month, on a 340 they had the old seats. They told me that some 340s have the new seats now.

I'm thinking of giving SriLankan a try for my J flights from London to Asia next year. I will probably give them the benefit of a full years business to see how it goes. Would I achieve flysmiles gold status if I earn 50k tier miles within 12 months of joining, or do I need to first attain silver at 25k followed by a further 50k making it 75k in total to achieve gold? How are te lounges in Colombo?
thx, SF

You need 50k miles in total to achieve Gold. Lounge in CMB is pretty good, nice selection of hot and cold food and decent drinks selection including champange.

Two reviews below, one showcases the new A320 J class the other the longhaul A330 J class
