There are significantly less seats in Premium Economy for 359 so the $ will be much higher.

If your flying pattern is Oceania to Europe then you will feel this more drastically.

I highly doubt the surcharge will come down. Both BR and CI have hiked the YQ significantly this year because Formosa PetroChemical demanded new hedging contracts. The two have generally followed each other in YQ adjustments.

CI's pricing is very lopsided. I remember earlier this year they offered 1800 AUD for Sydney to London and yet for Brisbane to London they offered 2400 AUD in PE. The story is same in Business class where Brisbane never drops below 4600AUD and Sydney went down to 4200 AUD. Shows how high yielding the BNE-TPE route is. Seems BR often offers far lower prices in BNE but it will be interesting if that also increases once the B787 replaces the A330.

Personally I was planning to use PE all the time from now but if PE is going to cost 100% more than discounted economy then I have to reconsider as its not worth that much.

This is because Sydney simply could not support 2 daily (so CI had to undersell it), not Brisbane being very high yield (being only 1 daily and has to share seats with AKL).

I Have to admit CI Seems to be gradually reducing their 2nd daily to SYD. From march it will be 10 weekly. BNE-TPE is high yeild for the prices they are asking. But AKL -TPE pricing is more aggresive. CI may want to start a direct flight to AKL eventually.

It seems CI has settled with pricing now its B777 and A350 fleets have settled.

Cheapest premium economy x2 the price of cheapest economy.
Cheapest Business class 2x the price of cheapest Premium economy.

You think this is reasonable?
I think a few years back premium economy was cheaper than current pricing. I remember you could get PE from some chinese travel agents for under 1000USD (with short haul business class) to USA from Hong Kong most of the year.
Now it is more like 1400USD+

E fares are still cheaper than M fares, which is about the same as it was when Premium Economy launched, so it seems reasonable and not really changed (at least as far as SFO is concerned).

Most of the fares to Aus or Europe that I looked at E was slightly more exspensive than full priced economy. But then SFO is probably cheaper with its B777 60 plus PE seats. I really think CI made a mistake in not having more PE seats. My guess is 40-46 seats is about the right number. I am happy to still pay for PE as I never usually book the Cheapest economy.

Definately the biggest change is the value of upgrading with points. I personally think upgrading between PE and Business is no where as valuable as when before PE came. Also spouse upgrade is useless. Did a check yesterday 55k HKD to have 2 passengers in business class. 65k HKD to set up a spouse upgrade which is far from certain. I sadly missed out when C not Just J ticketing was able to use this perk.

Are you guys continuing with Dnyasty?

Already dropped CI unless it's for convenience in short haul.

Long haul ONT is attractive but not enough incentive yet to move other than booking award tickets.

The last I remembered you had given up mostly on Elite airline programs. Do you feel as a whole the airline industry has devalued their loyalty programs?

How do you deal with sleeping better in Business class? I find it so annoying that when I want to sleep with the clothes getting on the plane. Of course we need to dress reasonably smart it is not that comfortable for sleeping as well taiwanese airline cabins are usually a little too warm with the blanket and hence I start sweating.

I considered getting a loose pair of clothes (very casual) to change into as soon as the plane takes off but think it might seem a bit odd thing to do.
Any suggestions?

Perhaps just wear the casual wear onboard? I don't think people really care nowadays how you look as long as it's appropriate.

China Airlines' Pilots have announced that mgmt. has violated the previous negotiation agreement from August. Because of that, they are holding an emergency council meeting on 2/1 to determine whether or not a strike over Chinese New Year will be held. Management has refused to adjust flight schedules and award bonuses for redeye flights (they want NT3k-4k per redeye flight landing), and have stated the union should think about the companies bottom line. Management has already agreed to a bonus increase that costs NT120million dollar, per diem increase, and double pay for national holidays as well as off-day flying. Hilarious what CI mgmt. has been through with all the unions.
