While B747-437B may have achieved greater general enlightenment had he couched his opinions in more diplomatic terms, there was certainly nothing in his posts that constituted a TOS violation as I understand the TOS. It is not, to the best of my knowledge, a TOS violation to hold a very unpopular opinion, any more than it is a TOS violation to post too often, or to politely disagree with another poster.
B747-437B was most definitely accurate in stating that, for whatever reason, the tsunami warning systems in many victim countries (including India) were woefully inadequate. We can all be hopeful that his horrible tragedy, which has captured world-wide attention, will result in the installation of life-saving warning systems in even the most remote corners of our big blue marble.

my x-post comments
[x-posted from long tsunami thread, just to make my point of view known...]
I found this thread while browsing around the ORP forum. Clearly there is a huge amount of anger directed against B747-437B. His sentiments, while perhaps more baldly stated than most, are NOT unique. For example, see this op-ed piece in the SF Chronicle, making many of the same points. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/artic...INGORAIIMP1.DTL
Also, as somebody who (a) has visited India twice (b) has Indian friends who live here and abroad (c) has a masters degree in international relations and (d) lives in New York and was downtown when the Twin Towers collapsed on 9/11, I do agree with some of B747-437B's comments. He raises fair, although perhaps uncomfortable and depressing, points.
I think it is wrong for people to ask him to retract his statements or to demand that he be "fired" as a moderator. I don't like everything people say on this board, and I'm sure people don't like some of the things I say, but I wish there was a little bit less finger pointing and righteous indignation.
Just my 2 rupees. And no, I have never met B747-437B.

It is your utterly condeceding tone with regards to local knowledge - you might be of Indian decent but that does not make you unique in terms of knowledge - meaning despite your preassumprions - there are in fact people who both have lived in India or have other relations to the region at large - I have lived twice for a yea in India and Pakistan - and also have a sister - by adoption from Sri Lanka - which will not make me totally incoherant to the situation in the region that you are addressing.
I find your tone utterly insuitable for an intenational enviroment such as the one that prevails on FT. Maybe your local knowledge should be praised - but I don't.... Learn to repect that not everyone will share your views....
Cheers

At this time, I am the only person doing this. Reason for this ties back to the old FT software's limitations, and some decisions that were made when moderation was introduced in July 2001. At that time, myself and "Moderator1" (a.k.a. "Burkey", who has now retired from moderating) attempted to moderate anonymously. This grand plan lasted about three weeks, before overwhelming public opinion forced us to out ourselves.

Or are you saying that you are the only person who has Randy's blessing to maintain multiple handles.

I agree with skofarrell - this thread is rambling and way OT, especially in ORP, who posted all his thoughts in the original thread.
Close it.

A handle called "moderator 1" is hardly something that can be kept hidden, especially not if it is from a user with moderator rights and "moderator" under the name.
Nice try, but no prize.

William,
You better hurry up and register BillyBob before someone else does.
