Omni Post Counts

I just noticed that when I post on Omni, my post count is increased.

It doesn't bother me as I really don't consider post counts to have any importance at all, but out of curiosity I would like it to know if the rule about that had been changed or if this is simply a technical glitch.

Thanks, Sean.

I am sure Randy must have had some reason.

Be interested to hear his view on this.

Why? What difference does it make?

ozstamps Dec 17, 2004 3:36 pm

Why?

Because Randy runs this board last time I heard. It appears he changed his previous policy is why. Maybe he didn't and it is something he is not aware of. Hence my question, and probably dovster's.

Who knows. It is why this thread was started in the Only Randy Petersen Forum is my guess - what's yours?

Lot of newbies who registered a month or two back and posting there in OMNI for an hour or so on word association threads or Mongolian Brain Teasers to get the 100 post minimum access to start free iPod congas in SPAM or pushing phoney $250 Travel Vouchers etc, directly caused this new policy to be outlined to all:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/annou...ouncementid=18

And Randy signed that himself.

Kids running around (as many did) posting 100 smilies or needless bumps of threads in normal well ordered Forums in a clear attempt to get to the 100 post limit got spotted quickly by regulars and mods, and many of their posting IDs were banned by Mods. Well done. ^

Seemed like that system worked well. Randy insisted only posts on MILES AND POINTS got you the right to post in SPAM etc. And nothing in OMNI is about miles and points, unless by total accident. So those posts deliberately were excluded from counting. ;)

But with the little games threads on OMNI where some members have 10,000 posts in 1 thread or whatever, 100 posts from a newbie goes un-noticed. This says it all IMHO, and was only posted 4 months back:

"We feel that it's better to give first into the Community of FlyerTalk by way of content, advice and information than it is to be lined up at the goodie wagon. I feel that becoming part of the Community of FlyerTalk will go a long way toward enjoying the other benefits of this wonderful group of people.

The entrance level to enjoy posting in S.P.A.M. will be contributing 100 posts to the topic of miles, points or travel, as well as being a member for at least 60 days. It's what we started with and what we still require today.

Randy"

I doubt he doesn't know, since this was the statement from dan

And since it was Randy who decided to bring it back, I would be bold enough to assume that this was his decision also

Who knows, maybe he can chime in on this, and we won't have to speculate on the whole ordeal ;)

The requirement for posting in OMNI is the same as for in SPAM, no?

Dovster Dec 17, 2004 4:51 pm

Actually, I was only wondering if it was a glitch or not. Beyond that, I don't care about the "why" as I don't care about the post counts.

My point exactly.

yes, and the OMNI requirement was there before the SPAM requirement, so the situation Oz outlines never arose, as kids/people couldn't post in OMNI at that time without the 100 post requirement.

Randy Petersen Dec 21, 2004 12:23 pm

i am aware and did re-educate myself on th issue and rvert making the posts count. I think i wnet through a period thinking i/we had to respond to every single issue that came up - and this was one of them. OMNI came out of out member base as an idea, it is to this day a very popular forum and while the comments are not likely relevant to the topic of miles and points, they are relevent to what has evolved as a community. Certainly some members are more frequent in posting here than in the standard forums, but then again, that's the individuality of the community.

i think i could argue either way on this one with myself and probably win each time - but as long as the members who frequent that particular forum are fully responsible for their posting, then a post is a post. Maybe i'm mellowing with the age of all this, but let's just let it ride.

Thanks for the question.

Thanks Randy for clearing this up :) ^

Since Omni posts count again to our totals, can I have my 750 (or so) posts back that were deleted? It would be good for my ego. :D

I lost close to 6,100, and I am not complaining ;)
