reputation?
OK, so I decided to swallow my objections to reputation and give some out,
and on my second try I get this "sorry you've given out too much in the last 24 hours" nonsense. What gives? Is 2 in the last 24 hours too much? P.S. Sharon, you get a point in my book, even if the system doesn't recognize it. |

I give up already, but I sure think that violist and jerry a. laska are pretty cool guys!!

Thanks to both ... I was under the impression (mistaken, based on
discussion of the procedure in other threads) that one could give out great gobs of the stuff. Not that I'd ever do that, mind you. |
I've been a member for 4.5 years, and have over 3000 posts, but I don't have enough reputation points to be able to do a positive hit on someone's post.
Is that how this is supposed to work? |
Another reason I dislike the reputation feature is that it has introduced an element of competition to the community. And please don't tell me I need to explain why competition is corrosive to a community, if that's what is important?

Some thoughts:
**Of the last 5 people to give me reps, three did not have enough points to count. Two of those three wrote nice comments, so that makes it about the same thing as far as I am concerned. **No one who has dinged me has ever signed his name. At first that annoyed me. Now I am glad. It stops the possibility of my getting angry at someone and makes it impossible for me to lower myself by getting revenge with a return ding. **It's an amusing little game. Yes, like anyone else I prefer getting positive reps but somehow even the negative ones are interesting. (I go to the letters that were rated and try to figure out if the dinger really did not like the letter itself or was just trying to get at me.) **No one person can really screw you. Your worst enemy -- IF he has enough points to ding you -- can only do it once every 17 days (and then only if he has been giving his maximum reps every single day). **The Reputation Game does not contribute majorly to FT but neither does it cause any real damage. For all of that, I am glad that the reps are not posted publicly. |

The link in the second post says membership time and total number of post count. I don't really care, but I've given out positive dings since the board came back up. If they don't "count", I'll just go back to my old way and post publically "nice post", or something to that effect. |

Good post Dovester.
So far I have given out only positive reputation remarks and I have alway signed them, except one time when I accidentally posted it before I finished my remark. Oh well, it was positive anyway.
Yesterday, after a long string of receiving only positive reputation remarks, someone (guess their 17 days were up) ;) dinged me for a post I made months ago. Somebody obviously has way too much time to spend thinking about me. I can't imagine wasting time on somebody I didn't even like--shoot I barely have enough time for the people I really love. Very odd. |

Very odd. I got a negative "...(yawn)...." from someone who actually took the time to find my post, click the icon, change the default from approve to disapprove, and type in an anonymous remark, and send - rather "white sheet," if you ask me. Someone with an exciting, glamorous life in a world capitol of culture with nothing better to do than hang out on FT and take the time/energy to ding people, and use up one of their votes on that. How very sad. :( :D In a perfect world, the reputation system would be karmic, and for every ding you give, your own point system would take a hit, as well. |
Oh man, if I had to post very time I get "dinged" I'd need my own forum :D
