True.

But I feel Randy's decision will lead to a kinder and gentler Flyer Talk.

Don't forget, you can still chivalrously issue an "approval" (bling) while expressing disaproval or disagreement in your comment. In other words, you don't actually have to present a ding to make your point.

We need not be embarrassed.

I included no comments with my dings. Most of the dings I received had no comments. Those few dings that I got which were accompanied by comments were brief, to the point, and not abusive. Those who sent them did nothing wrong and I will certainly not be angry with them.

The only ones who need fear the sunlight are those who used this to send flames and those who signed their dings with others' names.

I believe they are a tiny minority and will not be at all upset for them to face the consequences of their actions.

I agree 100%.

How diabolical! It never even occurred to me that someone whould do that. If I were the recipient of a lying ding, I would feel I had the right to ding that individual right back.

I think if I found out that someone dinged someone and falsely signed my name to it, I would feel I had the right to ding them back too...

...with my car. :D

And if I left a positive rating for someone and falsely signed your name to it, does that give me the right to ding you with my car? ;)

Car dings, now those are dings worth obsessing over. :D

Weighing in kind of late, but here goes:

I guess I have had a total of around 15 blings, dings, and grays.

At first I was surprised that I cared when I got feedback like this. I was pleased to get a greenie. And then I was curious about who would send a ding anonymously. And I wondered if the blank grays without comments were blings or dings. I found myself wondering if the people I disagree with - a few who had gotten personal - were "blackening" my rep. That was fleeting, but interesting.

Then it came clear that it was just another game and it was interesting just to see how it worked out.

I would like to look back at the negative ones - I am very lately green in all 5 allowable spots - but it is not very important.

I look forward to the next tempest in a teapot - tomorrows and next month's and the one after that - 'cause it's endlessly interesting to see how we all use this funny medium of anonymous yet ongoing community. Not knowing each other, yet getting  ; looking forward to see what someone says, getting up the nose of another and having someone get up mine.

It's a hoot, really.

Best wishes.

Points... & miles?

All I have left to say about all of this is...
It's a good thing there are no negative FF miles, or we'd all be in big trouble! :D  :D

Well there are many constituent components of FlyerTalk membership.

Some folks as you rightly say do not know each other. You sound like you are part of that sector. You are very new here, and do I hope you get along to some Doos and meet some of your fellow FT'ers. Your views may change then. ;)

I am pleased to say I have met well over 300 different FlyerTalkers in person. On six continents. Some a dozen times. That is about 1% of all those registered here.

I have made some superb friendships among them, some of which will be lifelong I hope.

So it truly saddens me to see a totally un-necessary feature being enabled that causes much bitterness, and divisiveness among folks that do NOT know each other - that might otherwise get along just fine.

Allowing childish cowards to leave nasty worded dings allegedly signed by me (and many others) to some of their FT friends is not a thing Randy would be proud was occurring on his board. IMHO.

Those that (repeatedly) did so have shown enormous disrespect to Randy, and to their fellow members, IMHO, and I trust they are fully exposed.

Just my 2c.

I beg to differ.

Bling, bling!

I did not realize the dimension of this dimension of FT. Sounds great. I, too, hope to make some events.

Separately, I understand completely your ire with people who usurp your name and use to create bad feelings. Cowardly indeed. I did not mean to say, either that I think it is OK to ding anonymously. I do believe in standing behind my words and opinions and do not respect people who don't.

I was annoyed over the much more minor issue of getting dinged anonymously till I realised it wasn't worth it. Of course no harm was coming to me or to my relationships with others as was occurring in your case.

I wish you satisfaction in unmasking those who thought they could harm you or others from the shadows.

Best wishes.

Well, Monday has come and nothing has yet been revealed. Must say, I still do not understand the whole idea behind this measurement, nor its calculation. One of the stupider moves at FT. Nor what all the symbols actually mean.

rkt10 Apr 26, 2004 8:50 am

I, for one, like the dings. It is insteresting to see how our comments influence the opinions of others. I only wish we could see the running tally of dings & comments. Having it limited to the last 5 or so comments makes me want to see the entire list.

Frankly, the whole reputation thing is really really seventh grade. So, now I know who doesn't like me. I could have told who they were way before the reputation thing started.

(Would've posted this in OMNI, but the moderator said discuss reputation here, so here goes)

lala - me, too. Most all my dings were from that same clique; and if "consider the source" is a trustworthy axiom, 1) consider the history of that clique; and 2) know that two of my dings came from members of that clique who were banned from OMNI prior to the transition, so there you go. You need know nothing more.

I find it noteworthy that even prior to discovering that all feedback would be ID'ed, the only three dings I gave out were to people who had ALREADY dinged me. I guess that means we've come to an understanding.

The other dings made sense to me, so there you have it.
