while technically, reading the terms for OMNI, such multiple posts about the more or less similar topic are o.k. and often even appropriate - I am pretty sure, that the last multiple posts we are talking about here (all posted in a few minutes) had in mind to be disruptive and/or made in (an exagerated) jest - a kind of humour that for me is getting really not only lost when muliplied, but 'a pain in the neck' for a large majority of OMNI lurkers.

For me, I thank the moderator for having taken some (kind of biased, but in my mind appropriate) exceptional action, without having explicit FT rules at hand.

For me the posters action were a lot more in direction of some kind of 'anarchy', then what the moderator did.

If "sincerity" is required for a thread to remain open in OMNI, then perhaps that requirement could be added to the FlyerTalk TOS (or at the very least, to the OMNI description). As it is, not too many threads would satisfy any "sincerity" standard.

Teacher49 Feb 26, 2004 9:55 am

I understand that sincerity is not the only standard. Some posts are in fun, or have other light hearted or satirical intent.

But in this case, IMHO, it amounted to a low grade attempt to do a "denial of service" - not on the servers, but on the discussion. Overwhlem it and prevent focus.

Personally, I don't care if this is agreed by all - or decideded upon by the management - to be the uniform standard.

But consider if everytime someone doesn't like to see discussion on a topic they simply blitz the board with multiple red herring threads intended to disorganize discussion ... what would be the result?

You are wrong about my motives. We disagree as to what constitutes "a repeat."

Your continued and consistent concern for my students is very touching. Would you like to contribute to the class party fund?

Actually, it has been made very clear by the folks who provide this forum that this is NOT true. "Anything goes" may fly in a lot of newsgroups/boards, but it doesn't fly here.

It does indeed sometimes seem as though "anything goes" if you are a moderator or a friend of the moderator. My further $0.02 since the moderators don't seem to mind additional meta-moderation discussion on this thread.

There is a time and place to discuss these issues, Omni isn't one of them. So, I'm moving this over to Only Randy...

anonplz Feb 26, 2004 11:14 am

(BTW, my "sometimes" remarks above apply to OMNI only.)

It mirrors the whole nonsense about ganging up and harrassing doc and getting him to stop posting his news articles. It demonstrates poor judgment. We have active members today who were involved in that nonsense (no names) who are still today engaging in the same type of headgames, what with, as teacher49 says, posting insincere fake topics in order to derail discussion of topics relating to same-sex marriage and gay and lesbian general interest issues. That seems to be teachers' impression and it is my impression, as well.

You say on the one hand how much gay and lesbian threads bother you, and then you immediately subsequent thereto begin to post lots of stupid gay and lesbian threads out of anger or whatever, flooding OMNI with threads not designed to really discuss gay and lesbian issues, but rather, to draw discussion AWAY from those issues.

Well, folks, if some of you hadn't harrassed doc ceaselessly, there would be someone participating in OMNI who would have ensured a great variety of topics of interest. You drove him away, and now you are still complaining that OMNI doesn't resemble something which pleases you. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/rolleyes.gif

OMNI is fine. Kwitcher*****in. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

You have clarified in a subsequent post that you were referring to Omni moderators above.

But, just over a month ago, on January 23, you started a thread in this very forum titled 3 Cheers for OMNI's Moderators! in which you posted the following:

And what has changed in the last month?
