Randy recalls:

This first FlyerTalk bulletin board lasted only about three months before we took it down either in late December 1995 or early in 1996. Our meta tags said 'chat' and we were inundated with people from the Scandinavian countries and Germany who were looking to pick up chicks on the "Internet." I think our noise to signal ratio was nearly 95% and I did not have the in-house resources to constantly - and I do mean daily, if not hourly - to clean up the type of language and hustling we had during this infant period of the Internet.
Hey Randy...don't be so down on yourself! That first attempt at FlyerTalk was not wholly without value. I got some pretty good free entertainment from it back then, if I recall. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif In fact, I'd say it was the true beginning of OMNI! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

BTW who is arturo ? In the thread that was started by Rudi and Matt (click VATI above) it is mentioned that someone should e-mail arturo's password. Strange ???

If I just not only knew his password but his identity!? !

Thank you.

Thanks. Interesting history. I have learned a lot from FT over the years. I also lurked for over a year before joining. Read regularly and post irregularly.

Anyone remember the 1000 mile contest Randy had during the 1998 launch? IIRC, birddy won several prizes as did Catman and I (under a different handle).

Correct answers were accepted at 12PM and a lot of people used to post at that time, slowing the site down.

Thanks for the history, it was interesting to read.

Randy, why FlyerTalk and not FlierTalk? As I'm sure with many FTer's, this site has become a part of my daily routine! Thank you!

Probably because he named the magazine WebFlyer.

Guess I know what happened to my original handle "Jay". I got purged.

Randy, thank you again for providing this wonderful forum.

Ditto to my original "jenidallas" which would be a no-born-on-date handle.

The message from Counsellor suggests that arturo is not an individual but a committee, a word which now means a group of people given a task or mission but which (according to C. Northcote Parkinson) originally meant one charged with the care of an insane person.
