Questionable contest results???

Did the winner (ptpinit) cast his/her vote five days or more ahead of the actual date?

If so, why didn't their handle appear in the list, sorted by date/time? I took a copy of a couple pages of the list (with August 28-30 dates) earlier today and greagseattle's guess was the closest in time (4:20 PM). ptpinit's entry does not appear on it.

So, either the display of entries was incorrect (or not sorted correctly), or the winner put in a guess at the last minute. (The contest rules required entry at least five days before the actual date of the 2,000,000th post.)

KathyWdrf Aug 29, 2003 9:28 pm

The interesting thing is, ptpinit's entry DOES appear now on www.flyertalk.com/contest .
This suggests that his/her entry was made at the last minute.

Also, the contest rules themselves state: "The five day date and time will be made public at the time the winner is announced." I don't see any mention of this in the announcement, though!

I think 2 million posts is a superb and impressive milestone, and who posted WHEN - to me is not the important part of it. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/thumbsup.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/thumbsup.gif

However, without making any editorial comment whatever on this post or the accuracy of it, made August 28, at 7.35pm, ... I paste it here unedited:

With a cash prize. Which evidently has been (or will be) awarded to someone who either didn't read the rules, or cheated.

Let's not jump to conclusions.

As you observed in your initial post, the explanation could also be that the data we were seeing wasn't real-time or wasn't sorting properly.

Since there are a variety of possible explanations, I think for the moment it's enough to have asked the question and flagged the issue. No doubt the question will be seen.

And then when Webflyer folks come back to their office (Tuesday?) they might clarify. In the meantime, anything more is pure speculation.

The most meaningful thing in all of this is how successful and impressive Flyertalk has become.

The introduction of a cash prize -- a very generous move by Randy -- is just another element that builds excitement.

Let's just wait and see what happened.

I posted my guess on August 23, 2003, approximately 2:37 AM MT.

(Too bad the time/date that each entry was made wasn't displayed also.)

P.S.: In case there was any ambiguity in my post above, the word "evidently" has two meanings: 1) "clearly or obviously;" 2) "on the basis of available evidence." I meant the latter definition, of course. See www.m-w.com , the Merriam-Webster Dictionary online.

Congrats, greg!

FWIW, and for future reference, might I suggest it would be easier to simply code the guessing screen so that your guess must be at least 5 days in the future?

That way you don't have to go backwards and remove guesses, as you would always know that the winning guess had been entered at least 5 days in advance.

One little quibble: The title of the announcement still reads "FlyerTalk 2,000,000 post winner: ptpinit."

Cross post from community (yes i know it's not allowed but i feel strongly about this - see below)

Congrats to whoever got it! Whether right or wrong I'm sure it will get sorted out in the end. And for the others - GET OVER IT - it's not like it's the friggin 'lotto that you can retire on for the rest of your life for goodness sake. Give me a break - unless you were within 20 seconds let it go. Fun thing that Randy offered, which is how I took the contest. Certainly not enough to lose sleep over & certainly not enough to get upset over. Life is too short people - go win the lotto!

Sharon

FewMiles Sep 8, 2003 12:24 am

Who here exactly is not getting over it? This thread was started due to a completely legitimate question about the contest results. It may very well be the reason for the correction that followed. I don't see any bitterness in it.

Rather rude of you, IMO, to be telling people to get over it because they think it's the "friggin' lotto". So what if they do?

KathyWdrf Sep 8, 2003 2:20 am

I second FewMiles' comment that Sharon's tirade is rude and off the mark.

If she had read the thread carefully, it should have been obvious that no one here was complaining that THEY didn't win -- merely that the contest rules were not enforced! The rightful winner, gregseattle, was declared so by Randy once he was back from Labor Day weekend. This settled the issue for good.

Then Sharon comes in six days later and launches an attack over nothing!

Note to Sharon: Read threads more carefully before launching tirade.

Have to agree it looks like it was all settled happily after ptpinit very quickly contacted Randy's staff. Seems to have been handled well all round to me.

HOWEVER seeing we ARE discussing this thread again for some reason, and seeing many number savvy FT'ers got realllll close, can I ask for some likely lotto number suggestions please? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif
