Originally posted by chexfan: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/eek.gif I must be a bit slow or something, but the description explicitly forbids THE BARTERING OF AIRLINE AWARDS. An SWU is a coupon freely given to elite members in addition to mileage. Selling either is bad. Trading the latter is OK, as long as "free issuance and community spirit" are kept in mind. What would be better a FlyerTalk w/o the Coupon Connection or no FlyerTalk at all? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/confused.gif The moderators crackdown on blatant selling (unlike eBay) when they see it happen. They've even tried recently to reign in the scope of what should be traded on CC (a thankless job), much to the dismay of certain FTers. My opinion is that if you don't like or agree with the activity, change the channel. |

What was the (dis-?) consent then, chaxfan? * FlyerTalk (Randy) doesn't really mind, that FlyerTalkers profit (as long as it is not real business profit) privatly from 'exchanging' coupons/gifts ...; but FlyerTalk doesn't want to take any legal risks (and doens't want to have disputes with the airlines/ff-programs) regarding the general rules and that's probably the reason for the (not strongly enforced) written rules. * I don't see big harm to me, when others 'barter' here - I am aware that the selling/bartering in the long term will enforce stricter 'conditions' and more burocratic work for us) on/with awards in general, but I think that award-'exchanges' on ebay etc. harm much more, than what is done here on FlyerTalk * as a frequentFlier-Talk reader/user I now normally don't check the Coupon section anymore, as I am not really interested much myself in what is available (on the 'market' and for what 'price') anymore. Exeception: when I really just have to give away something (like recently some Australian Open tennis tickets). |
Looks simple to me. If it aint for free, it should not be there.

I find it interesting to see how differently people argue the same concept, depending on what side of the market they seem to be on. Its all very amusing...

What's also amusing Gaucho is that I have and will pay for a premium seat, but not when the delta between the coach and premium seat is more than 2-3x.
Once the delta is higher than 3x, I feel the airline is screwing me, and I ave no qualms about screwing it back http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif |

Oh, c'mon skofarrell. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif This simple statement shows that your concern for the Coupon Connection is motivated by personal greed and not for the FT Community as a whole. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif[/B] Rather than judge, I prefer to let facts and actions speak for themselves. A quick search of coupon connection and my userid will show anyone that's interested an objective view of my "personal greed." [This message has been edited by skofarrell (edited 02-15-2003).] |
Originally posted by Gaucho100K: So, what is your point? We have a market economy here in the USA.... would you prefer the govenmernt fix prices for airline tickets? I think the airlines have allowed their premium cabins to become cost prohibitive. That fact is having a bigger impact on profitability than people trading coupons on FT. Case in point: A "C" class ticket to LHR cost my company about $2800-3200 three years ago. Today it is over $5800. Guess what? My company doesn't fly employees in paid "C" to Europe anymore. Its doubtful that we'll ever go back... Bringing back this thread on topic... to me, the funniest thing is that in the Coupon Connection FAQ" cblaisd straight forwardly admits:
from the Unofficial Coupon Connection FAQ: 3. Come on! Lots of posts offer something for trade. Isn't that against the rules (both the airlines' and per the forum's description) since it's "bartering"? Technically, probably yes. |
Item 3 on the FAQ makes more sense unedited:
3. Come on! Lots of posts offer something for trade. Isn't that against the rules (both the airlines' and per the forum's description) since it's "bartering"? Technically, probably yes. But in practice if you a) give as well as take, b) do not try to run a "business" on this forum (a la Ebay or getting items "on spec" hoping to make a "profit" -- see number 11, below), the notion of "community spirit" has seemed to trump the bartering language in the understanding of many (although to be fair, certainly not all!) consistent participants in this forum and on FlyerTalk. (There are also, no doubt, lots and lots of off-line trades that folks do -- but they are able to do so and have trust in their trading partners because of folks' good histories in this public forum). |
And I believe item 3 on the FAQ answers your concern Mike...

"Ummm yes officer. Well, see I was going faster than the posted limit b/c it makes me feel good. And that feeling combined with me being a good person should TRUMP the law..." http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/rolleyes.gif It's plain and simple. If you want to use the SystemWide Upgrade that United Airlines hands out, play by the rules that govern it. The bartering of airline awards is noted in at least two places to "N-O-T" be allowed to occurr in the Coupon Connection, yet it still is. |
Have you sent Randy an email yet?

What you fail to mention is that it is the law according to United. United, therefore, should be responsible for enforcing that law, not the CC moderator wannabe crowd that pops up every two weeks or so in that forum. Have you e-mailed Randy yet? Have you e-mailed United yet? I agree with Mr. Hammer. In fact, the smell of troll is getting stronger as this thread progresses. ------------------ Saving the world, one clue at a time.
