WHERE ARE THE MODERATORS????!!!!!!!

Randy,

Come on...enough is enough.

Real nice entering The Buzz this evening and seeing a subject line of "You people are a bunch of PRICKS!!!".

Made me really want to keep reading FT for the evening...so I went on to MSNBC for some lighter stuff.

All Randy is going to do is void the username, and possibly erase the threads.

The lame thing is, there's no real way to put an end to it, bamaman can sign on again as PRICKMAN1k and do it again and again. That's the internet for ya.

It's not like Randy can(or would) go to his house, drive him out to the desert, tie him to the bumper, and ram him against a cactus either (from a mafia book I read). Get it?...cactus...prick...

I bet a million bucks that if people had to pay to get on, there wouldnt be as much of that stuff (depends on how much they had to pay, I suppose). But at the same time there might be half as many people here. Hmmm...

Anyway, I hope Randy has an answer, I know I don't. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

FYI, the moderators kicked right in and you'll see that BamaDave is no longer with us - nor are his posts. I hope no one takes offence that to delete his threads meant we had to delte some of the comments from other members to Dave. There was no implication to censure anyone but BamaDave.

magic111 May 31, 2001 8:42 am

Having just read the post about 20 minutes ago (before deletion) it appeared to me that dave had deleted his original posting and had posted an apology for his rash posting based on a nice email from "Tom."

Dorian May 31, 2001 9:39 am

Moderators kicked right in??

How is it that there were 20+ replies?

If we had an email address for a moderator someone would have notified them with minutes I would imagine.

While tempted to post something that would endanger my posting privileges, I'll only state that after re-checking my email, I personally did not receive anything from anyone, including Dorian as to this particular post. If I had, I might have been able to take action a little sooner.

As noted, the good news is that the guy actually self-moderated himself, leaving only the topic title for some of you to fret about. Whomever Tom is, thank you for doing something helpful.

doc May 31, 2001 10:14 am

"While tempted to post something that would endanger my posting privileges, I'll only state that after re-checking my email, I personally did not receive anything from anyone..."

FWIW, one reason that I, for one, did not email you, is because I am fairly certain that you have MANY other more important matters to occupy your time! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Yet truly, the far larger reason is that, as you know, I simply do NOT complain to you about posts/posters, since I do not know that it is a current "policy" that one actually should! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

To the great surprise of many FT'ers, yet as you well know, I've NEVER specifically asked you or your staff to take action on anything or anybody, as I recall! Yet, if I absolutely knew I should, as a good citizen of FT, and I had a name/address that was responsible for such matters, I like many, would be surely be pleased to do so! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I'd kindly again urge that a clear, posted, enforced, policy be made a prioirty and easily available for all of us to see! It's something I've always personally wanted to see - and also would be willing to help in any way that I reasonably can!

And again, thanks very much for your ongoing efforts! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

SanDiego1K May 31, 2001 11:04 am

Randy, just an fyi - I sent you an email two or three weeks ago. I sent it to the email address in your profile. Every day for 5 days I received a message saying that the system had been unable to deliver it. Finally, the message was returned to me, and you never received it.

ScottC May 31, 2001 2:03 pm

I'm sure that if nobody had posted a reply to this rather childish post (instead of the 20+ posts it did receive) and emailed Randy or the board guys it would have vanished, no reply, no discussion about it, end trans....

Whoever posted it is rolling around laughing with all the commotion it has caused here (even after saying sorry..)

You can't possibly expect someone to keep their eyes on the board 24 hours a day (except DOC maybe http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif )

Moderators are great but in a grown up world a self-regulating board is better IMHO...

Hey, I posted what I thought was a pretty darn good tip on that thread. Oh well...

PAUL PALMER May 31, 2001 3:41 pm

As I said in the thread, there are days when you would believe that some of the posters here had never graduated to solid food. There is some really poisonous stuff going on over at British Airways sometimes. I am convinced that there are people who seem to pop up cause friction, and vanish. Truly if people are not prepared to leave their details then they should not be allowed to post.

None theless the are still (thank God) the exception rather than the norm.

Just my opinion

When an FT'er first sent me Randy's reply to this thread (on the road today) I was ready to write a bundle in reply.

Now all I will say is the response confuses and disappoints me (as I feel I have tried to help FT both public an private).

Dorian

p.s. When I have a problem with my wireless internet connection I certainly don't email the owner...I email or call someone designated to take such information. Not for even a second would I think to email Randy about a thread.

Randy Petersen Jun 1, 2001 8:26 am

Dorian, i answered your e mail hoping that you haven't interpreted my comments as pertaining to you. My muzzled comments were focues on the person in question in the incident - this BamaDave person. Trust me, like you i would have liked to rip in to his person in public, but didn't feel it appropriate to do so in public. I too am subject to the TOC of FlyerTalk and that is to not flame another member, even a BamaDave character. As for you, my opinion of you is the same as your opinion of yourself - and that's very good. You have tried both in public and private to hold high the goals of FT. Thank you again for that.

Now, let me address what i think your comment was about. What to do when someone like BamaDave comes along. I think the wrong thing to do is make a topic out of people like that. I think the right thing to do is to follow the guidelines for incidents like this as established in the current TOC which every posting members would have agreed to. Here's the direct passage from the TOC:

Any user who feels that a posted message is objectionable is encouraged to contact us immediately by email. We have the ability to remove objectionable messages and we will make every effort to do so, within a reasonable time frame, if we determine that removal is necessary. This is a manual process, however, so please realize that we may not be able to remove or edit particular messages immediately.

Hope this helps everyone, though i hope I'm like all of you in wishing that you never had to put up with a BamaDave again. The bright side is that given the population and traffic on this board, these are truly minor incidents though not taken lightly by us.

Cheers to all and again, thanks to Tom for helping get this BamaDave character part of our history and for Dorian for providing a topic that allows us to remind members of the TOC guidelines for what to do.

As for moderators.....I may surprise you.

doc Jun 1, 2001 10:09 am

Thanks very much for the info and clarification, Randy! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

"...Any user who feels that a posted message is objectionable is encouraged to contact us immediately by email..."

Any further clarification of us would perhaps be quite useful, particularly a specific email address for such "matters" and I for one, would very much apprciate it! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

the "us" is [email protected]

Randy Petersen Jun 1, 2001 10:36 am

actually, i think that link is on every page at the bottom where it links to "Contact Us" That link goes to [email protected]

As for my email box.....it's pretty big, currently edging above 500 emails a day. I think we have a rotational link so that the [email protected] circulates to many people.

Dorian Jun 1, 2001 8:23 pm

Randy et. al.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. Reading the order of posts above I thought you were replying to my comments...as did 9 other FT'rs who emailed me regarding this thread.

I logged on to check my email...after arriving here in YYZ...for my birthday and FT anniversary...

Thanks for another year.

I for one think the team did well with this poster. It is not that unreasonable that 20 posts could be made before it is pulled down. Actually, it is unreasonable that there were 20 people that would give someone that much attention. He wins!

And, sending an email could have only limited response. Some people that work with Randy do have a life and do not monitor every email instantly. If this was an ongoing problem, they could post another link to "911" someone, but with this wide open forum, that too could get out of control.

Not everyone might agree with these comments, but I for one feel I get full value for the money I spend on this site. No refunds required here.

Keep up the good work Randy.

Dorian Jun 6, 2001 9:13 pm

I don't disagree with you at all about FT and the FT staff.

This post was started to bring up Moderators...which we have been waiting and asking about for a very very very long time.

Correct, and implied to some degeree would have them, then no action. Now, as it stands, we are told by Randy that we may be "Surprized". Randy clearly does not have enough time on his hands! He does not have enough time to keep up with the Delta Sky Miles Issue and Save Sky Miles as we are hanging in the lurches waiting for his feed back. Why not have moderators and give Randy some more time (it would if managed properly and not in surprize mode)!

We have one goal with this and that is to make sure it works. After two weeks of making sure our plans are doable and with the feedback we receive from the 3 amigos, we will introduce 12 other members to help you out. They are here only to make sure your experience while on FlyerTalk is everything you want it to be.

Randy,

As a member who has been here since 1999... I really appreciate the great lengths you have gone to, to keep Flyertalk on the right track.

I have been impressed by this. I was concerned several times when flaming and personal attacks were the flavour of the day. We lost many good posters to those "misbehaving" few. But I am happy with the new guidelines that will not take effect unless someone crosses a line.

Thank you for your help and for providing more staff to help flyertalk run smoother. (and boy has it grown... so it needs more people!)

Getting back to the topic of this thread, which is the presence or absence of moderators: The "Only Randy Petersen" thread served a valuable function, that of allowing FTers to address questions to Mr. Petersen that were appropriate to plague him with. (E.g., "big picture" questions about airline programs, competition in the industry, and so on.) It got cluttered with complaints and backbiting about FT, and that clutter drowned out the good stuff.

Suggestion: reopen the forum only after a moderator is signed up who is prepared to prune and lock threads that are off-topic or that start to attract flames and bickering. Mr. Petersen's time for this non-paying endeavor is limited, and we as the beneficiaries of FT should be prepared to step in and cut down the off-topic clamor.
