Newbies board?

Lately FT has seen large numbers of new members (good) but lot's of them don't seem to know where to put their posts (not so good).

Many boards have a forum where any new members can post their questions without the risk of being flamed. I know it's easy enough to look down the huge list of airlines and hotels but several other topics are not so clear, this way you lower the strain on the moderators, the other members AND the new members.

So: would it be an idea to open a new users board?

GREAT idea! Maybe have an FTer who can serve as a moderator for the area to answer questions and such... but what do we do about not-so-new FTers (like me) who know better and STILL don't put posts in the right place?

Building upon the suggestion by ScottC, I'll renew my suggestion for a series of airline- and hotel-specific FAQs. These could easily be created in a collaborative manner by members of each board, and could probably save newbies considerable time.

Absolute necessary and what makes it the best ideas is that it comes from the members of the community. We are currently voting on a President of the new TalkBoard and that person should be in place within the week. Let's run it by him/her and see about asking a group of volunteers to put this together.

Yes, FT is still growing at a record pace. We are now over 860,000 posts. It doesn't seem that long ago we had a contest for closest time to the 500,000th post. Pretty soon we'll have to initiate the 1,000,000th post contest.....keep talking.

Lemme put my vote in ABSOLUTELY for a FAQ covering all those basic questions and a glossary as well to cover all commonly used abbreviations. One of the most prominently displayed questions answered should be

"how do I tell how full a flight is?"

I've heard about these noise-cancelling headset thingies -- anybody know anything about them?

Good idea. Matthew's thread on same subject from October 2001:

Blair, you're becoming a regular Doc with your links! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Very good suggestion.

In the meantime, perhaps a suggestion for newbies to visit:
FlyerTalk FAQ
FlyerTalk Glossary
FlyerTalk New Users' Guide

Might just have to do!
