Spell check

Randy,

I cannot spell worth a ****. How bout adding spellcheck to FT??????????

Droneklax Jan 3, 2002 2:38 pm

I suspect, but I might be wrong, that it would quite an expense.
How about running your post through spell-check on your favorite word processing software?
Not that it would help differentiate between "its" and "it's", mind you http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif
Sorry, pet peeve of mine.

Spell check is not an integral part of UBB, mikey1003.

As I advise folks at my office, create a desktop shortcut to Notepad or Word that will give you easy access to a reliable spellchecker from your Start Menu. From there you can cut-and-paste your post and run spell-check rather easily.

Email me privately at [email protected] if you need further instructions.

Cheers,

...essxjay

Welcome to the All-Purpose Spell Checker!

Thanks for trying out the All-Purpose Spell Checker (APSC) for Windows 95, 98, & NT. This program is designed to quickly and easily check the spelling of almost any plain text area of Windows.

The writers web site is now defunct, but download it from here.

Reminds me of a friend who listed her job title as "poorfreader" in a newsletter masthead.

EPS I believe that you have found Arturo's spellchecker http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

And I am sure that he will probably post and state that he doesn't need a psellchecker.

mikey, I would be happy with just having a preview feature that some bulletin boards have.

A quick search on www.tucows.com will point you to several spell checkers that integrate with your browser. There are also several Mac versions.

I once used this one: http://www.hotlingo.com/ and was very happy with it.

If you can't spell, take up something of which you are capable.

Obviously, that does not include writing. Ever.

Somebody sure is grouchy this morning!!!

Duncan Jan 6, 2002 8:15 am

Sorry to offend; thought it was fair advice overall, if a bit rude. If the person can't spell, it's clearly a bit late for any of us to teach him or her, and a spell-checker does not teach, as you know.

What is your advice? I look forward to it.

Stop being rude or don't post?

ScottC Jan 6, 2002 8:30 am

Duncan, not all of us speak english or australian, and I for one can assure you that my Dutch is better than my english. Therefor I tend to use a spell checker when I need to. I hope I did not offend you with this information or waste any of your valuable time with my reply to you email. May I suggest that you also take up a hobby of which you are somewhat more capable, people skills or being nice doesn't seem to be quite right for you http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

A spell checker is a tool for proof reading my post...only that.

svpii Jan 6, 2002 8:48 am

Duncan - I would dispute that spell checkers don't teach - I have personally experienced it! I've learned at least four thousand times that judgment has no "e" stuck in the middle there!!

Play nice - we like to assume we're all friends here, until someone forces us to recognize otherwise..

FewMiles Jan 6, 2002 12:24 pm

Duncan: Your posts are off-topic and do not contribute to the discussion in this thread. Furthermore your tone is disrespectful and rude. There are more diplomatic ways to make your point.

I hope your other two posts (thusfar) on FT are of a more pleasant tone. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Sew if ewe can't find a spell check, wee don't knead know spell check.

Just run it through word first. It works. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

svpii Jan 6, 2002 5:16 pm

What Word won't catch is what my brain does when I'm typing really fast. For instance if I intend to type "blue", my brain to fingers action is likely to insert "blew" - it says something about how you interpret thought when the gray matter is declining - I'm just not sure what!! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Perhaps FT should appoint a spell moderater for you. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Hey, mikey1003 _anyone_ can learn to spell. It just takes practice and paying attention. I used to be a horrible speller until I started my job at the newspaper. Ironic, eh? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Not to be persnickety about it but just READ. Read papers, read books, read whatever. I assure you that in time your spelling will get better as long as you pay attention to the the words you're looking at. And your punctuation will improve, too.

speechless Jan 12, 2002 9:21 pm

I'm just trying to imagine what the average spellcheck function would make of the airport codes, SWU's and random other ff terminology that gets tossed around here. Oh the horrors!@!
