Obnoxious Banner Ad

I know we don't pay anything for access to these boards and think it is fine to have ads running. Heck, I have even clicked through on some of them.

Noticed earlier today this nasty WINNER WINNER WINNER thing blinking away. I found it very annoying. And since the boards were down I wanted to see who the offending company was so I could avoid them as a vendor.

Looked like a real scam. Told me I just won over a thousand $$$. Yea right. Did not waste my time sending them an email.

Randy, how did you let these scumbags through?

This is my experience with these folks . . .

I wasn't pleased.

To disable those annoying javascript popups, here is what you do (Internet Explorer 5.0 and above):

Tools > Internet Options > Security > Custom button > Scripting > Active scripting > disable

This will turn off ALL javascript, so if you use a web based email like Yahoo, all the mail buttons won't work either. But it will turn off the pop-ups.

Not to offend, but FlyerTalk Suggestions is the appropriate board for this.

Almost sent a posting asking where it was, but now see it is way at the bottom. I never looked down there. (I think that was a line on Sex and The City last night)

I'm not familair with the ad you asked about. As to how we let them in - well, we didn't purposedly. Any ads on Ft are handled by Engage, one of the two largest banner ad companies on the Internet and while we have reminded them to our standrds (no popups, etc.) several times, they do slip up and then we go yell at them. Let us go yell at them.....as was mentioned, consider it a favor that we put them at the bottom of the page....trust me, it's not where they want to be.

Thanks for reply. I just cycled through the ads about 30 times and did not see it come up again. Mostly Hilton, Your Book, a credit card, and apartment.com thing but not that - - - travel agency (I use the term loosely).

We do appreciate your standards. By the way, there seems to be some space in the upper right corner that could take a small ad. Not that I like them, but you do have to pay the bills. Oops. That space might not be there if you have a narrow screen.

Bad ad is back. (remember, ads are okay and part of doing business)

BUT >>>>>

1 - Flashes obnoxiously while reading boards.

2 - Offers 2 Nights Daytona, 2 Nights Orlando, Cruise, 3 Nights Bahamas, 2 Nights Disney Pleasure Island all for $174. Yea, right.

3 - THEN to add to all this, it does pop up ads.

4 - Then to show how stupid people are, you are told that you must call within 3 minutes to get this deal. And people believe this crap?!!!

Randy - I really don't put your operation in this level of class.

Here is web site taken from the obnoxious flashing banner ad on FlyTalk.

I am normally pretty relaxed about these things, but this ad is really over the top. My complaints are:

1) It is visually obnoxious (rapidly flashing red banner);

2) It implies an affiliation with flyertalk by simply stating "If this banner is flashing, you've won! click here."

3) When, out of a desire to ensure I never do business with the offender, I click to find out which obnoxious weasel put this thing together, I find an even more irritating and obnoxious message that tells me that they amount I've supposedly one is so great that they can't process it online-- all I need to do is call this phone number.

I know we're all big boys/girls here, but I think this ad exceeds the bounds of fair play and is excessively intrusive-- even by the standards of the internet.

It's back.

******duel purpose post*****
Netscape sorta sucked big-time after Ver 3-whatever. Do what I do and go to www.opera.com and d/l its latest ver 5.11. I use it and an old atguard program (firewall and almost total ad-blocker). I happily view FT with black letters on a very nice white background instead or the horrible puke-color nor I have seen an agravating pop-up add in months.

At least there is no X10 ads here!

Randy Petersen Jun 15, 2001 1:35 pm

As requested and promised, I looked into this and here's the results from the agency:

> From: "Bennett, Breean" <[email protected]>
> Date: Thu, 14 Jun 2001 11:57:17 -0400
> To: "'Karen Hazinski'" <[email protected]>
> Cc: Randy Petersen <[email protected]>, Dan Fearman
> <[email protected]>, "Gordonson, Marc" <[email protected]>
> Subject: RE: Obnoxious Banner Ad
>
> Hi Karen,--
> This banner has been removed from your site. I believe that the problem had
> to do with a new webflight in which the banner was categorized as IRM
> Travel, rather than International Resort Marketing, which is why the ad
> slipped through after we had blocked it. However, the campaign has served
> no impressions today, your site has been removed, and both product entries
> have been blocked in your site registry tools, so you should not see it
> further.
> I apologize again for the error as I am aware of the problems that it causes
> with your viewers. If you have any questions or further problems, please
> let me know.
> Thanks,
> Bree

As you can see, they are aplogizing to us for allowing it to slip through - the reason is that as we have told you before, we have asked these types of ads to not appear on FlyerTalk. Cool?

LIH Prem Jun 15, 2001 9:53 pm

Yep .. way cool. Thank you.
